Local Unit & Position Description

DNV GL – Energy’s Sustainable Use Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Evaluation Energy Engineer to join our Policy Advisory and Research team. The experienced Evaluation Engineer will manage and provide advanced technical contributions to energy efficiency research and evaluation projects in the Northeast U.S.  Typical projects would include impact evaluations of residential, commercial, and industrial energy efficiency and demand response programs.  The successful candidate will serve as a project manager, mentor engineering staff, lead field teams, perform advanced data collection and complex analyses, and interface with clients.  This position can be based in either our Middletown, CT or Medford, MA office and will require New England travel up to 50% of the time.


Tasks May Include


  • Writing project proposals and work plans and approving site level evaluation, measurement, and verification (EM&V) plans
  • Managing projects and/or tasks involving engineering or field data collection elements
  • Analyzing energy performance and reporting the impacts associated with electric and gas efficiency improvements
  • Reviewing and making recommendations on savings calculations performed by other organizations
  • Imparting knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and evaluation methods
  • Performing and training personnel to perform on-site inspections and efficiency assessments
  • Designing energy analyses using advanced spreadsheets and building simulation software
  • Verifying installation, operations, and performance characteristics of energy-efficient equipment
  • Installing measurement equipment and analyzing measured data, including lighting loggers, power recorders, and other data acquisition systems
  • Leading teams to collectively complete EM&V tasks on time and on budget
  • Presenting and defending the methodology and results of energy efficiency program impact evaluations through written reports

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Architectural Engineering required
  • Related B.S will be considered only when paired with energy efficiency experience, or specialization
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in energy efficiency program implementation or program evaluation
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in evaluation, measurement, and verification of energy efficiency measures
  • 1+ years of proven experience leading teams of engineers
  • Minimum 2 years of project management experience
  • Relevant work experience in an energy consulting environment
  • Extensive knowledge of building science, HVAC, electrical, and other industrial systems
  • Advanced data analysis and innovative problem solving skills
  • Knowledge of non-residential building codes and energy standards
  • An organized, detail-oriented approach and the ability to work independently
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 50% of the time as required
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle required. Mileage will be reimbursed
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, ability to climb ladders, and spend several hours walking around buildings
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

Preferred Skills (Not Required)


  • Master’s degree or emphasis in Statistics, Economics, Energy Policy, Engineering
  • Professional Engineering license
  • Experience managing energy efficiency programs and/or related research at an electric or gas utility
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) and or Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP)
  • Familiarity with IPMVP, California Evaluation Protocols, DOE’s Uniform Methods Project, and northeast Technical Reference Manuals
  • Relevant energy-related certifications such as CEM, HERS, BPI, LEED AP
