JOB SUMMARY: Under limited supervision, initiates, designs, plans, develops and directs studies and programs related to cancer prevention and treatment. Serve as leader, mentor, and technical supervisor to research assistants and other staff.
Assists the Director of Clinical and Research Services in coordination and management of the Clinical and Research Services (CRS) comprehensive integrated cancer research and control program.
Strives to expand cancer research and cancer control capacity at Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC).
Cancer research activities:
In collaboration with others at ANTHC including Clinical and Research Services, Community Health Services, Alaska Native Epidemiology Center, Alaska Native Medical Center conducts research on prevention and treatment of cancers that impact Alaska Native people. Identifies priorities for cancer prevention and develops initiatives to improve the health of Alaska Natives.
Provides research support to the director of Alaska Native Medical Center Hematology and Oncology department. Attends regular meetings with director and attends ANMC Tumor board and Cancer Clinical Core Business Group (CCCBG) meetings.
Identifies sources of funding for health research projects; develops project proposals including establishing
collaborations with other Tribal Health Organizations, academic institutions, and other organizations; develops and monitors grant programs, budgets and contracts. Assures compliance with Federal policy and regulations.
Participates in the design of research studies and projects. Ensures appropriate institutional review board and Tribal approval of research. Includes the research support staff in clinical and research services (biostatistics, data management, and research nurse support) early in the development of research proposals.
Oversees the conduct of research projects including hire of research staff. Conducts data analysis and write up research findings for both lay presentation and peer review publication. Serves as primary and/or co-author on publications.
Cancer program activities:
Coordinates and manages comprehensive integrated cancer control program. Designs, develops, implements and evaluates progress of program. Assists development of funding programs.
Works to raise national awareness of Alaska Native cancer issues and solicits funding and other resources to address disparity. Develops strategies to further national legislative and regulatory understanding of Alaska Native cancer issues. Compiles national, state, regional and census data from various data resources for cancer statistics.
Designs, implements and manages fund development activities for alternate resources. Assists with grant application process. Identifies and writes grants for funding from public and private sectors. Solicits funding for special publications.
Coordinates existing and new cancer programs, projects and initiatives. Assists Oncology Clinic with program design and expansion, including patient materials.
Supervises between 1-5 staff. Provides leadership, direction, and guidance to assigned staff. Develops goals and priorities in conjunction with employees, and assigns tasks and projects. Develops staff skills and training plans. Counsels, trains, and coaches subordinate staff. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations.
Organizes and conducts presentations to tribal leadership, tribal health directors, IHS and other health care providers and related organizations.
Provides technical assistance and support to the ANTHC pathology archive facility; seeks funding opportunities to support the facility.
Supports the Research Abstracts and Manuscripts committee as a peer reviewer
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and concepts of disease.
Knowledge of research program resources, protocols and procedures.
Knowledge of epidemiologic analysis methodology employed in research.
Knowledge of Alaskan Native health system, cultures and health issues.
Knowledge of data gathering, analysis and reporting.
Knowledge of effective presentation and public speaking skills.
Skill in survey design and database management techniques.
Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software, including statistical applications.
Skill in effective oral and written communication and presenting technical data at multiple levels.
Skill in grant writing and project management including data collection, analysis, reporting and evaluation.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers and representatives from other local, state and federal agencies.
Skill in providing technical instruction and guidance to peers in epidemiology.
MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION
A PhD in epidemiology, or public health.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION
Non-supervisory – Two (2) years in epidemiologic studies and health research in a health care, public health or academic environment. An equivalent combination of relevant education and/or training may be substituted for experience.
Supervisory –experience preferred

Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.
ANMC is not a latex free facility; an employee should expect to work in an environment where latex may be present.
May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule or be called out to work off-shift.
This position may require some travel to remote locations by the request of program Director.
