Tesla is seeking a dynamic environmental leader to join the Environmental, Health and Safety Team at Gigafactory 1. This role will be responsible for complex technical work in a wide range of environmental disciplines. He or she will support day-to-day operations while leading environmental compliance and risk management programs, waste reduction initiatives, and pollution prevention efforts across air, waste, water, chemical reporting, and hazardous materials programs. He or she will also manage external environmental consultants, and serve as the environmental technical subject matter expert and advise and influence internal business partners in order to achieve environmental performance goals and objectives. • Ensure Tesla facilities operate in compliance with all Federal, State, and local Environmental regulations

• Identify, assess, and control environmental risks to ensure they align with organizational risk tolerances

• Serve as the technical expert, providing support and advice to all functional teams with respect to environmental compliance

• Manage the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection application process for all environmental related permits including air, water, waste, land, etc.

• Coordinate and prepare environmental reports such as air emissions reports, TRI, Tier II, hazardous waste, and water discharge monitoring reports

• Support the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

• Perform incident analysis to determine causal factors and the most appropriate corrective actions

• Interact with Tesla Senior Leadership and representatives from regulatory agencies on audits and regulatory inquiries

• Monitor and analyze the developing trends and changes in regulatory compliance laws, rules and regulations

• Develop, revise, and improve programs for industrial battery recycling

• Assist in planning for changes in physical facilities, reviewing new or modified equipment and new manufacturing programs to meet regulatory and company requirements

• Support health and safety program implementation


• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or Environmental-related discipline; Master's degree preferred

• Professional certifications such as CHMM or CEM strongly preferred; Professional Engineering (P.E.) license a plus

• Minimum 7 years of experience working in environmental engineering and/or compliance management

• Experience effectively implementing robust environmental controls, training and policies to ensure full compliance and control risk in a complex industrial setting

• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-faceted projects in a fast-paced environment, where demands and priorities change rapidly

• Ability to communicate effectively with production employees, engineers, legal counsel, technical specialists, and management, cross functionally, in a multi-disciplinary, global environment

• Strong foundational knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and standards

• Excellent understanding of sustainability and environmental topics and fundamentals including sustainable design, planning, policy, waste, greenhouse gases/energy, responsible material sourcing, water, land use change, biodiversity, and EHS certification systems

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills

• Experience managing TSCA regulatory compliance for manufactured and processed materials

• Previous experience preparing air emission, TRI, Tier II/HMBP, hazardous waste, storm water, and wastewater periodic compliance reports

• Experience managing regulatory inspections and responding to inspection reports

• Experience managing PSD or Title V air permit compliance

• Experience maintaining and/or auditing ISO 140001 Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

• Evidence of exceptional ability
