Job Description

This position serves as the senior employee communications specialist for Keck Medicine of USC. Responsible for the effective development and delivery of a wide range of communications within the health system that advance strategic employee initiatives of Keck Medicine of USC. Oversees all aspects of production for one or more health system publications and collaborates with other department partners to foster efficient, consistent and timely communications. Develops and executes overall communication strategies to support employee engagement and employer branding efforts. This role partners closely with the Marketing department to lead strategic initiatives, communications and strategies. Creates and establishes relationships with key leaders in the organization. This incumbent must understand the business and have a presence at key events and meetings.

Essential Duties:
  • Oversees all aspects of production for one or more Keck Medicine of USC publications. Recommends content and format, determines writing and editorial assignments, ensures accurate, cost effective, and timely completion and distribution of all projects.
  • Writes and edits documents for Keck Medicine of USC, such as advertising copy, articles, memos, physician and leadership announcements, letters, newsletters, flyers, banners, talking points, intranet sites, and/ or other materials for online and/or print distribution. Provides channels for employee feedback and response from leaders' Company communications to employees including emails, newsletters, intranet "home page" content, etc. related to the organization's mission, strategy, policies, and performance.
  • Oversees graphic design staff to ensure a high-quality, on-time product when brochures and other materials are required. Selects appropriate artwork, such as photos, charts, graphs or illustrations, as needed. Ensures all communications are in accordance with brand identity and style standards, and collaborates with other divisions to share content and integrate messaging as needed.
  • Ensure timely news and information from Keck Medicine of USC and the Keck School of Medicine of USC is communicated strategically. Participates in staff meetings, sharing information and initiating ideas that further the goals of the entire department. Create presentations, communications plans and materials, and provide event assistance.
  • Contribute ideas, write articles, edit, proofread health-related news and feature stories for internal and external, print and electronic publications for Keck Medicine of USC and its entities.
  • Develops and oversees publications calendars. Determines schedules and deadlines. Ensures successful and timely completion of publications and/or projects.
  • Oversees content of all internal web pages and ensures content is up to date, accurate and appropriate. Work with web services to develop online materials.
  • Executes other duties as assigned or requested. The organization reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.


Required Qualifications:
  • Req Bachelor's Degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field
  • Req 5 years Experience in a communications-development role with increasing responsibility.
  • Req Experience in writing, editing, and producing publications and/or marketing communications for an employee-facing audience.
  • Req Proven ability as a self-starter and problem-solver who evaluates situations, articulates possible solutions and earns the respect of others by carefully listening and presenting productive responses.
  • Req Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously and under stringent deadlines.
  • Req Ability to successfully work in both team settings and independently on projects .
  • Req Ability to think independently and develop strong communication solutions/recommendations.
  • Req Proficiency in Word and Microsoft Office Suite.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Pref Master's degree in journalism, communications, public relations or a related field
  • Pref Experience in physician-directed communications and health plans, and producing communications and publications within a health care environment.
  • Pref Experience curating and editing content within Microsoft SharePoint and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign.


Required Licenses/Certifications:
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)


The annual base salary range for this position is $81,120.00 - $133,010.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
