A little about Network Services Division:

WaTech's Network Services Division delivers data networking telephony solutions providing state agencies and other authorized consumers these critical services:

  1. Connectivity to Washington State's Governmental Network (SGN)
  2. Resilient and highly available Internet access
  3. Connectivity to Enterprise applications and shared computing (private cloud) resources
  4. Colocation resources (data center interconnectivity)

Network Services is comprised of two main services:

  1. Network Core (access to the state's network core and global routing tables)
  2. Transport and Connectivity (remote site and data center inter-connectivity)

Network Planning and Design provides service to the widest range of customers (state agencies, federal agencies, state boards, statewide municipalities, tribes, and nonprofits) across the Washington State to develop technical solutions that solve real-world business problems.

What would you be doing in this role?

The primary role of a Systems Design Engineer is to theorize, engineer, and develop High-Level Design (Strategies), Low-Level Designs, and Implementation Plans for nearly every change throughout the State's Wide Area Network, fiber optic networks, network core, and "Cloud Highway".

A Systems Design Engineer (SDE) is expected to employ effective consultation practices and techniques to assist customers in identifying and validating their business requirements, goals, and objectives.

Next, the SDE employs engineering concepts and methodologies to synthesize requirements, technical specifications, and expectations into highly-complex technical solutions which are used by over 60 state agencies, boards, and commissions that impact all 39 counties, tribes, and non-profits statewide.

Finally, this position is expected to be a Subject Matter Expert in everything networking; ranging from routing protocols and switching fabrics to lifecycle strategy and infrastructure configurations. Here's What We Are Looking For:

  • Seven (7) years of Information Technology (IT) experience involving the engineering, design, management, monitoring, and troubleshooting of medium to large sized telecommunication networks.
  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Network Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, or an equivalent technical discipline from an accredited college or university. Note: Additional years of experience and desired IT certifications may substitute for the Bachelor's degree on a year-by-year basis.
  • Collaboratively working with customers to discover and gather business requirements (i.e. use cases, business drivers), technical specifications (i.e. limitations, constraints, restraints), goals, and objectives in the development of technical solutions that solve business problems.
  • Five (5) years' experienceworking with Cisco networking architecture (switches, routers, OTV, FabricPath) and Cisco's Infrastructure Operating Systems (IOS) Commands & Configurations.
  • Five (5) years' experienceworking with the following protocols:
  • Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
  • Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
  • Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF)
  • Possess (or be able to acquire) and maintain the following certifications:
  • Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) Routing and Switching
  • Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)
