The Senior Director, Quality, Patient Safety and Infection Prevention reports to the Chief Quality & Patient Safety Officer and leads UC San Diego Health's quality improvement, patient safety, and infection prevention programs. In this capacity, they will successfully provide training, define methodologies, and facilitate development of and promote support for best practices and evidence-based medicine.

The Senior Director, Quality, Patient Safety and Infection Prevention provides leadership, direction, change management and policy development for the activities in quality improvement, patient safety, and infection prevention programs for UC San Diego Health. They will organize, direct, and participate in the analysis of data concerning clinical quality and patient safety and shape effective tactics for achieving defined goals. They will champion Clinical Excellence initiatives throughout UC San Diego Health and lead the organization to achieve goals directly related to quality improvement, patient safety, and infection prevention.

In this role the Senior Director will provide administrative leadership to Patient Safety, Clinical Performance Improvement, Infection Prevention and Clinical Epidemiology programs including all aspects of the operating budget, strategic planning, the delivery and monitoring of clinical quality, and improving patient safety. This includes hiring, training, developing and managing staff to ensure that a qualified staff exists to meet group objectives.

The Senior Director is an expert in QI/ PI Methodology and quality metrics reportable to public, private and regulatory agencies. They will possess a deep understanding of and demonstrated expertise in the use of quantitative and qualitative measurements as they apply to analysis of practices, operational procedures and revenue impact in relationship to patient outcomes.

The Senior Director will perform a key leadership role in the development of an organization-wide culture of safety and quality improvement, informing the evaluation and implementation of performance improvement (PI) models, assessing PI education needs, linking PI activities and data with strategic goals. Oversee database system management utilized to abstract, analyze and report national quality measure outcomes to regulatory agencies and quality improvement forums.


  • A Bachelor's Degree in nursing or other healthcare profession.

  • Valid California RN License, or current RN license in another state with commitment to obtain CA RN licensure upon hire.

  • Minimum of eight (8+) or more years of relevant experience in complex health care setting.

  • Progressive hospital management experience, with in-depth expertise in quality and process improvement methodologies, statistical analysis, and data base management.

  • APIC Certified in Infection Control.

  • Expert working knowledge of current quality and patient safety initiatives in the healthcare industry demonstrated in recent professional experience.

  • Demonstrated experience and demonstrated ability to improve patient safety, clinical, and infection control outcomes.

  • Strong computer, data analysis, communication, and project management skills.

  • Experience and demonstrated ability to maintain a safe and effective workplace. Ability to effectively integrate functions with business plans and to accomplish results.

  • Comprehensive and thorough understanding of all elements of health care delivery, including strategy development, business planning, operations, and financial issues.

  • Experience and ability to work effectively with all levels of organization, including department chairs, faculty, and other members of the medical staff.


  • Advanced Degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration or a related field.
  • Ten (10+) or more years of relevant experience in complex health care setting.
  • Five (5+) or more years of manager (or higher) level experience in complex health care setting.
  • Experience in an academic medical center.
  • CPHQ or other related certification.
