Overview

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will develop and execute commercial quality processes for the design, test and manufacture, and operations and maintenance of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and related technologies. You will be responsible to drive quality products throughout the organization by maintaining a corporate culture that emphasizes accountability, discipline, and attention to detail at all levels. You must have a passion for solving complex problems and providing operable solutions; act with minimal direction and on your own initiative; and be adaptable as you will work on a variety of applications and systems. We are looking for an individual that can implement innovative quality management system solutions, supporting accellerated innovative technology and research activities, as well as efficient, predictable production capable solutions that will supportsub-orbital & orbital manufacturing & launch, and engine development and production. You will report to the Blue Origin Vice President of Safety and Mission Assurance. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to establish, implement and mature a quality system that:
    • Encourages agileprocesses for innovation and research
    • Generates verifiable development and qualification baselines
    • Transitions product into manufacturing/production, delivering repeatable, predictable high-quality products and services
    • Enables successful operations and maintenance of product
  • Enable company operational excellence, earning business unit and function trust to:
    • Develop requirements for integrated quality system applications between engineering, manufacturing, and operations to ensure the consistent and ongoing use of quality best practices and efficient communication of quality issues
    • Implement methods to measure, analyze, and proactively improve quality system performance consistent with company quality goals
    • Ensure product acceptance processes for launch vehicle, spacecraft, engines, and related technologies, encouraging personal accountability for workmanship and yield excellence required for human spaceflight
  • Lead and coach Quality Assurance staff at all Blue Origin sites to:
    • Identify and mitigate quality risks, demonstrating ownership by developing operable solutions in a collaborative environment, maintaining a world-class quality system
    • Monitor standard cross-functional processes; understand contract requirements, specifications and measurement methods; and understand risk-based decision making
    • Maintain company quality assurance manual and related documentation
    • Engage in engineering design reviews and make recommendations to enhance the quality and manufacturability of new designs
    • Identify, champion, and support opportunities for innovation in quality improvement
    • Facilitate troubleshooting of quality issues with diverse teams, lead causal analysis activities to drive to root cause and corrective action
    • Participate in acceptance processes; ensure adherence to and health of acceptance processes
    • Provide quality assurance subject matter expertise to receiving and inspection, manufacturing and test, and operations and maintenance (i.e. NDE, receiving inspection, metrology, calibration, and FOD methodologies)
    • Maintain and manage employee technical certification program for technicians
    • Define, develop, and deliver quality education / training programs and materials
    • Lead and coordinate resolution to customer related quality issues and communicate quality and continuous improvement requirements and expectations with external customers on quality related concerns
  • Manage process health assessment methodologies and perform periodic audits of the application of our quality system, maintaining compliance with company and identified industry standards
  • Team with the Supply Chain organization to develop and implement supplier quality processes that support the integrity of purchased materials, parts, assemblies and services at an appropriate cost with on-time delivery
    • Recognize differing product needs across research, development, production, and flight operations and maintenance
    • Evaluate supplier and subcontractor quality systems and product effectiveness; maintain strong partnerships
  • Engage in the development of Safety and Mission Assurance strategic and business objectives
  • Manage Quality Assurance business objectives: prepares budgets, analyzes variances, and initiating corrective actions where required

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering, or technical discipline
  • 15+ years’ industry experience in manufacturing, test, or operations field with at least 10 years in a quality engineering role
  • Past experience implementing and managing quality management systems; familiarity with AS9100 or ISO9000 Quality Management System and/or related quality systems and programs
  • Quality assurance experience in production environment
  • Strong experience in leadership, planning, and project management
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired

  • Aerospace, space launch, military or commercial aviation, or heavy industrial equipment manufacturing preferred
  • Blend of small/midsized firm and large firm experience, able to leverage limited resources to maximum benefit
  • Quality assurance experience in development, production, and maintenance environments
  • Knowledge of design for inspection or testability
  • Knowledge of NDE and receiving inspection methodologies
  • Knowledge of design for inspection or testability
  • Relevant experience in transitioning a product from development, through production to operations
  • Relevant experience in AS9145, Advanced Product Quality Planning and Production Part Approval Process

  • American Society of Quality, Certified Quality Engineer certification
  • Six Sigma Green, Black Belt, or comparable certification
