As the Senior Director, Individual Disability Benefits you’ll lead the Individual Disability Claims operations and ensure execution of goals and objectives to support the business unit strategy. You’ll oversee the day-to-day activities, the ongoing growth and development of the team and will also be responsible for identifying and executing larger initiatives that improve claim adjudication through deep understanding of  industry best practices. You will collaborate with other leaders, including  underwriting, sales, actuarial, operations and legal to evolve service to our customers and partner to improve our processes, tools and systems.

In this role, you'll report to the Vice President, Individual Disability and play a crucial role in establishing the strategy and making certain that our strategy meets or exceeds operational, divisional and corporate leadership goals. The volume is high and the work is complicated and evolving. The team operates in a multi-system environment and is responsible for clearly understanding muiltiple individual DI and business DI contracts.  You'll need tounderstand the various underwriting programs, including but not limited to, fully-underwritten and guarantee issue.

To help scale and support future growth, you’ll place a continued focus on  engaging and developing your team members to help grow future leaders by identifying high potential team members, providing continual coaching and mentoring, and role modeling effective leadership and communication (including facilitating productive group, skip-level and 1:1 meetings with an appropriate cadence).  You’ll also partner with Human Resources and Talent Management to employ an engagement strategy that aligns with our Core Values.

This position is located in Portland, Oregon and relocation assistance will be provided to an out of area candidate. 


Collaborate with other members of the Individual Disability Leadership team to ensure alignment to business unit strategy.  Lead department operations and team members to ensure goals are met in terms of claims decisions and acuracy,  thorough investigations, reserve and payment. Ensure appropriate application of contract provisions for individual disability income, business disability and LTD (when both LTD and IDI are present) contracts for individually underwritten, guarantee issue and graduate medical education business.      

Develop and implement disability management strategies in partnership with the VP Individual Disability and the reinsurer and in alignment with  industry best practices. Coordinate cross-departmental communication with IDI and GSI underwriting, Individual Disability Actuarial, Physician, Nurse Case and Vocational Case resources, LTD Benefits, ARU and SIU management to meet claim management goals.

Participate in and influence industry study groups regarding individual disability claims. Participate in Individual Disability product development. Develop and manage a fully trained staff capable of providing effective claim service in a changing business and legal environment.

Monitor Individual Disability claim activity with a focus on early identification of patterns and trends in newly filed claims. Direct department to meet planned goals while effectively managing the budget. Direct systems and workflow changes to meet claims department and/or division objectives.


Education:  Bachelor’s degree in business or related field  and Master's highly desired.
Experience:   The ideal candidate will have  8-10 years progressive experience in Disability Claims, Individual Disability experience preferred. 3-5 years people leadership experience required.

Strong understanding of financial impacts of claims to the business.
