The Senior Director, Corporate Communications will lead the strategic implementation, and oversight, of key external andinternal communications initiatives. The successful candidate must have a strong background in bothinternal and external communications in the bio/pharmaceutical industry, includingexperience in both corporate and product public relations. The candidate should ideally haveexperience in launching new bio/pharmaceutical product(s) as well asother general media relationsexperience, includingsocial media.Partnering with the VP, Human Resources, the Senior Director will also beresponsible for assessing current employee communications in light of the corporate vision, strategy and goals to develop and implement a strategic plan. The candidatemust be an exceptional communicator (written and oral) with strong business acumen, ability to influence, demonstrated team building and leadership capabilities and executive presence.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Communication Strategy:Partner with VP, Human Resources to establish an internal communications vision and strategy that is aligned to the company’s mission, vision and goals. This strategy will include senior executive engagement, visibility and multi-channel communications plans. Develop an overall communication strategy in support of Avanir’s vision of becoming a leader in the CNS therapeutic class.  Develop messaging and execute initiatives and programs in support of the strategy for all external communications. Partner withmarketing brand teams to develop and execute communications program in support of the brand strategy and new product launch(es).  Ensure that the brand messaging is consistent with the overall corporate messaging. Develop and manage relationships with key external stakeholders and enhance Avanir’s corporate reputation among all Key Opinion Leaders.

Brand Support: Update and maintain brand guide while ensuring continuity externally and internally. Ensure effective use of employee communications channels to provide varied yet consistent messages and opportunities for engagement while maintaining employer brand continuity.

Media/Press Release Knowledge: Assume responsibility for enhancing and maintaining the corporate website. Write and manage the review process for corporate press releases and other company materials. Coordinate all external communication with Otsuka North America and Otsuka Japan PR group.

Travel Requirement: Some travelrequired to help support offsite meetings/events.


  • BA/BS degreerequired, preferably in English, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field with advanced degree (preferably MBA) highly desirable.
  • 10+ years of corporate communications experience with hands-on experience with external media relations, including social media, and messaging platforms in public sector organizations, preferably pharma/biotech.
  • Strong social media and digital acumen in required.
  • Public relations expertise including broad experience in areas such as media relations and government affairs.
