The Precision Engineered Products Group – Senior Design Engineer is responsible in leading its existing Plastic Injection Molding tooling design to meet or exceed its tooling design plans in order to support the local units’ customer base goals.  

The Senior Design Engineer, Precision Engineered Products (PEP) Lubbock, Texas is responsible for development, design and implementation of a wide variety of all tooling and precision metal forming operations consistent with standard tool configuration, including cutting and forming tools.  Works with engineering to identify problems with performance of tool life and recommends solutions or enhancements. The Sr. Design Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager, PEP Lubbock-Engineering Department.


  • Coordinates, plans, schedules, coordinates, arranges, and tracks all phases of tooling projects to ensure on-time completion within budget, and may write appropriate requests
  • Estimates schedules, project cost, budget, and coordinates outside suppliers, vendors, tool shops and services as needed to accomplish projects
  • Conducts analytical studies on engineering proposals to develop mold designs for parts and prepares and maintains detailed drawings of equipment and documentation packages
  • Knows and practices basic engineering principles and procedures and Applies sound engineering judgment to problems, which may include conflicting design objectives  
  • Knows capability of standard mold making machinery to provide tool engineering assistance to all production areas
  • Has a thorough knowledge of steel types and their uses as well as plastic resins and how they affect mold designs
  • Capable of original design concepts, and designs equipment that meet safety regulations to procure tools and equipment with little or no assistance
  • Has thorough knowledge of basic design principles for all types of molds such as standard, three plate, cam (mechanical and hydraulic), unscrewing, cold runner, hot runner, and insulated runner and understands undercut design principles, lifters, collapsing cores, early ejector return, etc., and other mold components for successful designs
  • Detailed problem solving and continuous improvements to facilitate fast changes while maintaining working relationships
  • This position requires the ability and the willingness to train and to impart knowledge to subordinates, to prepare them for future assignments, and/or as a candidate for the position of senior mold designer
  • This position also requires that an individual shows personal initiative and continually prepares to accept a higher level of responsibility, by training future advancement and/or for higher level positions and assumes technical ownership of projects
  • Develop process controls including material specifications and operational sequences
  • Determine and resolve functional problems related to finished assemblies as well as parts stampings
  • Represents tool engineering on cross-functional teams and to the customer
  • Performs any and all tasks as required to meet and exceed company commitments
  • Supports on-going production to assure on-time delivery and company profitability
  • Ensures compliance with the organization standards for cost control, waste reduction, quality, safety, on-time delivery
  • Performs all tasks in a safe and responsible manner  
  • Other duties may be assigned



  • Bachelor's degree or Master’s degree in Engineering from a senior university in Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in tool design
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI and related safety regulations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCad, and SOLIDWORKS
  • Proficient with Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing techniques
  • Ability to maintain a safe work environment
  • Minimal travelrequired to vendor, customer and supplier sites
  • Lean manufacturing experiencerequired
  • Problem solving and analytical skills are required
  • Ability and willingness to travel to visit prospective and current customers, suppliers and manufacturing locations as needed


  • Possesses the technical ability to critique and evaluate special projects such as robotics, automated assembly machinery, and other specialized equipment
  • Ten years’ experience in the injection molding
  • Experience with ERP, SOX and P&L responsibilities


  • Detailed knowledge of tooling concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with vendors, suppliers, customers, and associates
  • Effective project management skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of changing situations
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
  • Ability to think ahead
