THE POSITION:
The PNNL IT Infrastructure Division is seeking a senior database administrator with deep experience with SQL environments, including Oracle and SQL Server, to develop, deploy and maintain multiple development, quality and production database environments. This position is part of a database team that works directly with software engineers and business customers to support business and research applications that enable the Lab research mission and staff productivity. This position offers the unique opportunity to support applications in Lab R&D as well as enterprise business. The successful candidate will be able to provide professional service to our customers while exhibiting technical acumen, innovation and automation with database technologies. YOU @ PNNL
Your key responsibilities and accountabilities would include:
- Implement and administer complex databases for business and research applications
- Provide technical expertise for Microsoft SQL Server related design, modeling, high-availability configurations, performance and security
- Work with application developers and research scientists to ensure databases conform to production standards
- Ensure reliability and availability of database platforms including availability and performance monitoring, patching and upgrades
- Troubleshooting and problem resolution for database related issues
- Identify process improvement and implement automation to increase efficiency and quality in operations
- Ensure databases are backed to meet the business’ recovery objectives
- Provide off-hours and on-call support of production processing
- Possess leadership skills around prioritizing and managing personal and team tasks.

Desired skills:
- Technical expertise with Oracle database design, modeling, configuration, performance and security
- Experience with Oracle to SQL Server migrations
- Understanding of database tuning: software configuration, memory usage, data access, data manipulation, SQL, and storage
- Understanding of security policies, procedures and auditing with database authentication methods, authorization methods and data encryption
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams
- Ability to evaluate and perform SQL query optimization
- Database experience with Cloud environments
- Demonstrated ability to solve challenging technical problems with innovative solutions
- Customer service oriented and approachable

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field, and 8years' relevant experience, or Master’s degree and 6 years' relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

- In-depth knowledge and database administration expertise with Oracle databases, versions 11g and 12C, and SQL Server, versions 2012 and beyond
- Experience working with Linux and Windows operating systems
- Knowledge and understanding of all aspects of database tuning: software configuration, memory usage, data access, data manipulation, SQL, and storage
- Development and execution of database security policies, procedures and auditing-experience with database authentication methods, authorization methods and data encryption techniques

Additional qualifications
- Experience with Enterprise environments, not versions, of SQL Server is a plus
- Scripting experience in Perl and PowerShell
- Demonstrated ability to lead database technology deployments
- Ability to evaluate and perform SQL query optimization
- Operating system and hardware platform knowledge
- Database experience with Cloud environments a plus
- Demonstrated ability to self-direct, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks and priorities
- Exceptional communicator with both technical and nontechnical audiences
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated ability to solve challenging technical problems with innovative solutions
- Customer service oriented and approachable
