The Control Systems Group at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Senior Control System Engineer.
The Control Systems Group is part of the Systems Department and supports the UTRC mission by developing and transitioning algorithms and techniques in system architecture design, dynamic analysis, estimation, system identification, optimization, control and verification for components and complex integrated systems of relevance to United Technologies Corporation (UTC), and by bringing innovative, emerging, and disruptive technologies in control and related areas into UTC for use in its products. Applications at UTC comprise aerospace (gas turbine engines and aerospace subsystems) as well as commercial (HVAC/R systems and components, elevator, fire safety, security, and integrated building systems including integration of buildings into the electrical power grid). By combining a fundamental understanding of the application with advanced tools and techniques for modeling, simulation, estimation, system identification, advanced control, and verification, UTRC provides our UTC business unit partners and external customers with world-class estimation, system identification, and advanced control systems solutions.
Prospective candidates should have primary expertise in advanced control system analysis, development, and design as well as in methods for estimation and system identification with a combination of skills in multiple of the following: mechanical engineering, electronics, computer engineering, aerospace engineering and systems engineering. Experience with standard modeling and control development software such as Matlab/Simulink is a must while experience with Python, C/C++ and Modelica is a plus. Some application experience is desirable.
The primary responsibilities of the Senior Control System Engineer will be to participate in research, development, application, and transition of algorithms for estimation, system identification, and advanced controls in the context of the UTC business units, including Pratt and Whitney, UTC Aerospace Systems, Climate, Controls, and Security, and Otis for diverse applications. UTC applications comprise aerospace (gas turbine engines and aerospace subsystems) as well as commercial (HVAC/R systems and components, elevator, fire safety, security, and integrated building systems). The Senior Control System Engineer will focus on the estimation, system identification, control architecture definition, and advanced control system design, development, simulation and implementation for complex systems with dynamics in multiple domains including mechanical, electrical, thermal, and fluid systems. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to independently perform control architecture evaluation and selection, dynamic modeling, estimation, system identification and control system analysis and design, and should have a strong background in optimization and numerical methods. The ability to implement control algorithms in real-time embedded systems for verification and is a strong plus and the demonstrated ability to lead teams is a strong plus as well.
Qualified candidates can have up to three years of post-degree work experience. The candidate must be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary, multi-national team focused on innovation and be able to partner with leading worldwide institutions to fulfill organizational objectives. The candidate is expected work effectively with the UTRC program offices and UTC business units, with teams of researchers within the Control Systems Group and across the Systems Department and across UTRC and UTC, and in support of appropriate government funding agencies to enhance existing programs, support opportunities, and assist in the acquisition of contract awards. Participation in industry/university partnerships is expected. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, and the candidate is expected to have published in optimization or control system conferences or journals.
The candidate must be a US citizen or US permanent resident. The ability to travel domestically and internationally (up to 20%) is required.
Ph.D. in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering. Must have specialized in the fields of system dynamics, optimization, or control systems.
