Senior Computational Scientist at The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, ME

Computational Sciences, the central bioinformatics R&D department at The Jackson Laboratory, is seeking a Senior Computational Scientist who will participate in its collaborative bioinformatics program and make leading contributions to the cutting-edge projects in Genetic Diversity Studies & Complex Trait Analysis at the interface of mammalian and human genetics at The Jackson Laboratory.

The successful candidate is expected to independently establish collaborations within JAX and to provide leadership in grant applications as Co-I/multi-PI, or bioinformatics leadership in a significant scientific program at JAX. The major areas of research at JAX include cancer biology, aging, immunology, metabolic disorders, neurobiology, and stem cell & developmental biology.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver bioinformatics and/or complex trait software.
• Demonstrated experience in conducting education in bioinformatics and/or complex trait genetics.
• An in-depth understanding of genetically diverse mouse populations such as the J:DO/CC populations.
• Experience working within genetic diversity data analysis, esp J:DO/CC data analysis.
• Experience with “omics” data analysis, statistical genetics & Biostatistics

The preferred location of this role is Bar Harbor, ME, however the role can also be located in Farmington, CT. The option of working partially remote will be available upon further discussion.

Responsibilities

• Develop innovative computational approaches for genetic diversity studies and complex trait analysis, including integrative analysis of gene expression, proteomics, and physiological phenotypes
• Interpretation of biological and/or translational relevance of analytical results obtained using genetically diverse mouse populations such as the Diversity Outbred (J:DO) and Collaborative Cross (CC).
• Develop and advise genetic diversity and complex trait analysis services and strategic planning
• Develop and deliver education on genetic diversity and complex trait analysis for variety of audience
• Coordinated, team-focused science involving multiple collaborators
• Data presentation and visualization
• Primary authorship of scientific publications and grant applications
• Mentoring junior- and mid-level scientists
• Presenting project strategies and results at relevant internal and external meetings

Qualifications

• PhD in Computer Science or related field plus 7-12 years of experience in Bioinformatics research, excluding time spent to obtain PhD. Candidates with significant pre-doctoral experience in the relevant research area as a researcher and demonstrated research track record during the pre-doctoral period will also be considered.
• Demonstrated ability to establish research and mentoring leadership in addition to lead obtaining grant funds to support part of the group led by the Senior Computational Scientist.
• Successful incumbents demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated experience managing projects and collaborations.
• Prior successes in and desire to contribute to team projects on an ongoing basis is a must.
• The candidates with proven track record of “omics” data analysis, statistical genetics & Biostatistics, independent collaborative work and leading contributions to a biological discipline would be preferred.
• They are expected to sustain collaborations with The JAX research staff and faculty on both the Farmington, CT and Bar Harbor, ME campuses and to visit the other sites of JAX on a regular basis and as required.

Computational Sciences at The Jackson Laboratory

Computational Sciences is a central department that runs a fully integrated comprehensive collaborative program in bioinformatics and computational biology in all major areas of research and development at The Jackson Laboratory. Our focus is to adopt and innovate-in emerging technological opportunities and make leading contributions to the scientific programs at The Jackson Laboratory. The program is delivered by an agile group of 50+ highly dynamic and experienced computational scientists and software engineers whose team-focused scientific work is supported by well-established project management and collaboration with IT. The staff of Computational Sciences co-authored 130+ papers in 5year span, including reviews and book chapters, in a wide variety of areas of bio-medical and computational research; participate as primary authors in 15+ grant applications/year; delivered numerous talks at International meetings; co-leading the informatics components of number of research programs such as Mouse Phenome Database, Genetic Diversity Initiative, Center for Systems Neurogenetics of Addiction, Single Cell Genomics, and Patient Derived Xenografts.
