Job Summary

As a technical leader, this role has significant impact and influence on implementation of organizational policy and programs in the area of UCSF’s IT network security infrastructure. This role is responsible for the following:

  • Provide senior professional level network security implementation skill set for enterprise and Data Center environments of UCSF
  • Configure/Install and manage various network security devices, features and technologies: Intrusion Detection/Prevention systems, Network Access control solutions, Web filtering solutions, Network packet brokers, network traffic visibility solutions
  • Assist in development of network device hardening standards
  • Apply advanced professional communications concepts, industry practices and relevant policies, procedures and objectives to resolve highly complex issues
  • Determine methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results
  • Research and evaluate alternative technologies and architectures in relation to UCSF’s infrastructure needs
  • Manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes and resources
  • Installation and implementation of wired and wireless network as well as security products and technologies in UCSF’s complex and diverse IT infrastructure supporting unified voice, data and video communications
  • Interface with Management and vendors to develop and implement new solutions to meet business requirements
  • Perform technical and cost analysis as well as Capital expenditure development work for UCSF’s network infrastructure needs
  • Act as an escalation for resolving problems in the enterprise network and its systems
  • Work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment with UCSF’s security and systems engineering teams to identify network security risks and issues and create plans to mitigate and resolve them
  • Assist IT network architects in developing Capacity planning and risk management reports
  • Participate in on-call duties and work some evenings, weekends, and holidays as required in support of UCSF initiatives



Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology related field; or minimum ten years hands on experience designing, implementing and managing large-scale network security infrastructure consisting of firewalls, Intrusion Detection/Prevention systems, Network Access control solutions, Web filtering solutions, Network packet brokers, network traffic visibility solutions
  • Advanced level knowledge of various network security devices, features and technologies like firewalls, Intrusion Detection/Prevention systems, Network Access control solutions, Web filtering solutions, Network packet brokers, network traffic visibility solutions
  • Advanced level knowledge of network security protocols, technologies, standards and tools
  • Advanced level knowledge of various authentication protocols and solutions
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with network device management tools, technologies and products
  • Understands implications of work on other areas of IT and Business
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team with minimal supervision
  • Clearly understands the communications and network needs of the organization and has skills needed to address those needs
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments
  • Has highly developed problem solving skills to independently resolve issues using defined parameters and technical expertise
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate with technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization via strong verbal, written and presentation and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze highly complex communication hardware and software systems for maintaining a real-time resource that impacts campus / medical center / OP-wide network users
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations



Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC)
  • GIAC Network Forensic Analyst (GNFA)
  • Advanced level knowledge of various VPN technologies
  • Advanced level knowledge of security architectures in private and public cloud environments
  • Advanced level knowledge, skills and experience with Cisco Routing and Switching products 
  • Advanced Level knowledge, skills and experience with Juniper Routing and Switching products
  • Thorough knowledge of structured cabling systems, network facilities, electrical, UPS, etc
