This position will support the development and optimization of mammalian cell culture systems for the production of recombinant proteins.  This will include the generation of expression constructs, transfection of mammalian host cell lines, clone selection, genetic cell line stability, and evaluation of production cell banks.  This role will also be responsible for developing and optimizing media and feed formulations to increase cell density and protein yield.  Additionally, this role will be responsible for general cell line and protein characterization, including bioassay support, ELISA’s, PCR, SDS-PAGE and Western Blot analysis.  This role requires a thorough understanding of cell culture studies in support of process development for mammalian products and a conceptual understanding of late stage development, GMP operations, and a working understanding of associated regulatory requirements. This is a hands-on, laboratory-focused position requiring a balance of independence and teamwork within a small, focused group of scientist and technicians reporting to a Principal Scientist.

Major Responsibilities

  • Cell line development activities such as vector construction, cell culture maintenance, clone screening, cell line characterization and cell line stability
  • Media development and optimization based on cellular demand,  productivity, and critical quality attributes
  • Design and qualify upstream scale-down models and DOE design strategies to initiate process characterization and robustness studies
  • Generate scientific reports, including process development reports and supportive reports for IND CMC sections


  • Extensive experience in cell biology, molecular biology and bioassay development
  • Experience and technical knowledge in mammalian cell line generation and clone selection
  • Experience with methods and strategies in cell line characterization and cell line stability
  • Experience with media and feed development to increase product quality and yield
  • Experience with molecular cloning techniques such as plasmid construction, preparation and analysis; RNA, cDNA and genomic DNA preparation; DNA electrophoresis
  • Working knowledge of DNA sequencing technologies and analysis of DNA sequencing data – multiple sequence alignments, identification of mutant sequences, in silico protein translation, etc.
  • Hands on experience with Ambr and laboratory scale automated bioreactors desired, but not required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team


  • PhD or MS in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related Biological Sciences
  • Ph.D. with 0-3 years of related experience; M.S. with 6+ years of related experience; B.S. and 10+ years ofrelated experience
  • Experience in cell biology, molecular biology and mammalian cell culture
  • Experience in mammalian cell line development, cell bank characterization and large molecule upstream process development
