The Harvard Graduate School of Education seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the area of early education, affiliated with the Saul Zaentz Early Education Initiative. The faculty member who is hired will teach courses in early childhood education and early learning and development, primarily to master’s students, and will also lead and teach in professional education programs related to early education, to support professionals’ growth and also to build and sustain relationship with organizations in the field. At HGSE, Lecturers are individuals with extensive professional experience and a professional identity that revolves around improving educational practice.
Context for the Search
In July 2016, HGSE launched the Saul Zaentz Early Education Initiative, with a generous gift from the Saul Zaentz Charitable Foundation. The mission of the initiative is to promote the knowledge, professional learning, and collective action necessary to cultivate optimal early learning environments and experiences. The Zaentz Initiative is a bold and forward-thinking investment in the field of early education, and one that is squarely aligned with HGSE’s mission of expanding educational opportunity and improving outcomes, especially for the most vulnerable children. The Zaentz Initiative includes three interlocking strategies for impact: conducting research to drive policy and practice by bringing credible evidence to bear on public policy affecting young children’s early learning, strengthening the field through high-quality professional learning, and cultivating new leaders in the field. The new faculty member will play an integral role in the Initiative, particularly with respect to the strategy for bringing high-quality professional learning to the field and cultivating new leaders in the field.
Requirements include a doctoral degree in education or a relevant discipline.
We are especially interested in candidates who have exhibited innovative strategies for improvement in early education and/or entrepreneurial approaches to early education leadership across the mixed-delivery system. Ideal applicants will also have experience teaching in a university at the graduate level and/or related experience with the professional development of early education leaders, as well as demonstrated ability to serve as a broker to the field through written and spoken communications. Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse student and community populations.
