SAS Programmer

location: Apple Valley, MN or remote


Statistical Analysis System (SAS) programmers work with our Psychometricians and Statistical Analysts to manage data and program custom applications using SAS for large and small scale testing projects. This position requires custom SAS programming to automate portions of technical reports, conduct quality checks on SAS code developed by others and also train team members on advancedSAS techniques. This individual works under the guidance of senior members of the Assessment Design and Psychometric team to complete all assigned tasks, but is expected to conduct analyses independently and develop, and validate his or her own programs.

The Assessment Design and Psychometrics (ADP) team consists of assessment specialists, psychometricians, statistical analysts, and technical writing/editing experts. Work is divided by assessment type and program needs. Experts work primarily with English language learner (ELL), alternate and early childhood assessments or with 3–8, end-of-course, and authored innovative assessment solutions. While this is how the department is divided, team members work together across assessment types to provide expertise and support on projects as needed or directed. The SAS programmer reports to designated senior psychometricians in the department.


  • Manage data files used in analysis.
  • Pull data from data marts and data bases
  • Clean and process data to prepare for analyses
  • Conduct validity check on the data with minimal oversight.
  • Support psychometricians with item- and test-level analyses as directed.
  • Fulfill data analysis needs for technical reports by automating report tables.
  • Serve as quality control support on technical reports.
  • Adhere to data security procedures
  • Work with the technology team and other stakeholders on setting reasonable expectations regarding data formatting and turn-around times.



  • BA/BS in Statistics, Mathematics, Social Science or other quantitative field.
  • 2 years' experience in programming in SAS for educational tests.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform quality control checks.
  • Demonstrated skill in using MS Word (style sheets, tables), Excel.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills along with strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.


  • SAS coursework and SAS certification
  • Experience in psychological and educational statistics
  • Experience with other statistical programs (R, SPSS, MPlus, etc.) a plus
