Job Summary: 

The Director of Environmental, Health, and Safety deploys the Health, and Safety programs within Advance Auto Parts through ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local regulations, standards, codes, and Company policies and driving Continuous Improvement in Safety and Claim KPI’s within a specific region.  The Director of Safety also supports and leads certain enterprise wide goals and initiatives.  The Director of Safety will work closely with other Safety Directors, asset protection managers, and field management, as well as all other functional groups as necessary to ensure the enterprise wide Safety goals are met.  This position supports the South region.  Responsibility includes approximately 3000 stores. 


  • Improves the quality of and ensures the effective execution of safety and environmental management processes following established regulations, policies, standards and best practices.

  • Reinforces and is actively involved in a proactive safety and works with Corporate Environmental Manager on supporting our environmental program.

  • Contributes and engages in the development, maintenance, enforcement and reporting of overall safety programs including body mechanics / ergonomics, behavior based safety, safe driving, Lock out Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, Universal Waste, Used Oil.

  • Educates, trains, and provides support to field management in the development and execution of consistent safety management programs.

  • Executes, measures, and monitors processes to assess the overall safety performance, identifying opportunities for improvement, and guiding teams to achieve.

  • Working with Risk Management team to identify trends and opportunities for improvements in tools, training or processes.

  • Ensures compliance with all safety and environmental programs.

  • Directs accident investigation programs, develops accident trends, and develops programs for improving performance.

  • Works with transportation safety on common safety and environmental issues to maximize organizational effectiveness.

  • Supports Vice President Risk & Safety with leadership on setting priorities and goals consistent with the corporate priorities and goals.

  • Engages in the typical responsibilities of an Advance Auto Parts leader requiring strong leadership, planning, evaluating, organizing, integrating and delegating.

  • Provides management of employees within group to ensure effective selection, retention, development, disciplinary action and performance management. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8years EHS experience, including 5 years of experience in multi-facility responsibility.  Previous distributionexperience and small box retailexperiencedesired.   

  • Degree in a safety related discipline preferred. 

  • EHS-related certifications (such as CSHO, OSHT, CET, CHMM, ASP, CSP) and advanced degree (EHS or Management) is a plus
  • Possesses safety management and program implementation skills.

  • Possesses working knowledge of regulatory requirements for federal and state programs, processes and program implementation strategies.

  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate performance metrics and outcomes.

  • Ability to travel 50% of time and work remotely with team members located across the county

  • Experience in training and influencing staff level on Continuous Improvement (CI) program initiatives related to safety, health and environmental.  Working experience with several of the following: Continuous Improvement processes, Total Performance Management (TPM), Six Sigma, LEAN, and 5s. 

  • The ability to develop, conduct and maintain training programs using lecture, PowerPoint, Web-based, or practical/hands on methods.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience with OSHA VPP and cultural/behavioral safety programs desired.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills. 

  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs; ability to lead others through change and influence.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

  • Skill in organization and prioritization, and attention to detail. 

  • Strong team player and leader with the ability to work across multiple functions and disciplines.

  • Ability to select, coach, develop, engage and retain a team of employees.

  • Retail industry experience a plus
