CTC functions as a Research and Development (R&D) Center for LyondellBasell’s North American Polymer Businesses. R&D focuses on improving polymers and polymer process technologies for our existing manufacturing facilities and on developing new technologies to meet LyondellBasell’s future business needs. Roles & Responsibilities
This position will utilize a variety of Rheological techniques to solve problems related to fundamental polymer research, material characterizations, process development, as well as manufacturing support for LyondellBasell’s plants. The candidate will also be responsible for planning, designing and executing experimental programs to reach business objectives.
Work with Rheology and the Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) teams, by using his/her expertise to develop new Rheology capabilities and improve Gel Permeation Chromatography capabilities. Serve as technical resource to the Rheology and GPC areas, maintain high-standards, positive attitude and good work ethics. Serve on multidisciplinary teams supporting product and application development efforts by solving complex problems. Participate in internal Expert Groups to leverage best practices, keep up-to-date with advances in the fields of Rheology and GPC areas, play key role in new instrument evaluation and selection.
Duties include ensuring safe and efficient laboratory operations, overseeing the necessary calibrations, maintenance of the laboratory equipment, safe handling of special chemicals and assisting with testing as needed. Ensure alignment of analytical testing, communication with management and customers while understanding priorities with business requirements.
Minimum a PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics or related discipline is required. Rheology of viscoelastic materials and/or 1-5 years industrial experience in the polyolefins industry preferred.
Have advanced theoretical/practical application knowledge of Rheology and GPC, with an understanding of the relationship between polymer molecular structure, rheological behavior, processing, and physical properties. Strong experimental skill withdynamic, capillary and extensional rheometers and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and temperature rise elution fractionation (TREF) experience in the characterization of polyolefins is strongly preferred.
Possess analytical problem solving, creative thinking skills, excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills. Experience with other polymer characterization techniques is a plus. Skill in Microsoft Excel macro or Visual Basic programing toautomate data processing, organization and reporting is preferred. Provides accurate information keeping customer focus. Ensure laboratory compliance with all safety standards, practices, and requirements.
Demonstrate technical expertise through journal articles, reports, presentations, posters, and/or patents. Maintain up to dateknowledge of key developments, trends and practices in the fields of Rheology and GPC through literature searches, reviews and conferences. Collaborate with others as a member of a cross functional teams to create or utilize advanced techniques todiscover, develop new technology. Good time management skill and ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines. Performs other duties as assigned.
