Resident Director reports to the Associate Director for Residential Life. Resident Directors at the University of Rochester are responsible for the oversight of residential areas housing between 600-1100 undergraduate students. Some areas of administration include, but are not limited to: staff supervision, supporting student learning opportunities, community development, adjudication of student conduct, and crisis management and response.
The Resident Director serves as a member of the Residential Life professional staff.
Under general direction and with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and action within established policy guidelines:
- Supervises staff, which includes: Graduate Assistants and Resident Advisors. Supervisory responsibilities include team building, goal and expectation setting, training and development, advising, staff meeting, formal and information evaluation, and other personnel related activities.
- Presents a comprehensive student development program for the residential area aimed at the creation of inclusive residential communities. This includes social, educational, cultural and recreational programs; student government advising and leadership development programs; emergency response procedures; counseling, advising, and referral mechanisms; intervention, medication and adjudication, etc.
- Advises/counsels individuals and groups of students on personal, residential living, and other matters. Makes referrals to other areas of the University when appropriate.
- Ensures staff and residents are aware of the rules and responsibilities of the housing system. Assists students in developing behavioral standards appropriate to group living in an academic institution.
- Maintains regular communication private management companies who have responsibility for the maintenance and facilities operations of the Undergraduate apartment complexes.
- Serves as liaison with other departments that support Residential Life's successful operation (Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Office of the Dean of Student's, Dining Services, etc.).
- Administers the damage billing processes for the living area. Publishes notifications to students regarding community damages, vandalism, and accountability. Responds to questions and concerns from students and parents. Liaison with the Bursar on matters related to damage billing.
- Coordinates the summer operations as assigned. Organizes staffing, building preparation, billing, check-in and check-out processes.
- Assists in regular inspections of the residence to ensure that appropriate facilities and cleanliness standards are being maintained.
- Assures compliance with all applicable fire, health and safety regulations. Coordinates with appropriate departments for fire, health and safety inspections. Follows-up on all health, safety, and security reports to ensure problems have been corrected.
- Participates in committee, research, and special projects related to student development with effective management and delivery of programs and services. This includes work within Residential Life, The College, and may include other areas of the University.
- Other Duties - As designated by supervisor. May also include option to serve as intern with other campus departments and programs (i.e. Orientation Program, Career Center, Academic Support, etc.).
Master’s degree required. 1-3 years full-time professional experience preferred. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with knowledge and experience working with undergraduate apartment communities.
