The System Architecture Laboratory at Hewlett Packard Labs has an immediate opening for a qualified post-doctoral scientist with experience in silicon photonics to join our team. This role will be responsible for the design of ultra low-loss photonic devices for data communication circuits, layout of these novel designs and experimental validation of the yield and performance of the externally fabricated devices. Some components of interest are: single-polarization and polarization-diversity grating couplers, multimode interferometers, directional couplers and microrings. The designs are intended to be compatible with the fabrication processes provided by the world class volume fabs HPE partners with. However, there is also opportunity to monitor the performance of device prototypes which are fabricated in HPE’s clean room by our team’s process engineer. This role will collaborate heavily with a multi-disciplinary team of device and circuit designers and process engineers. We strongly believe that state-of-the-art automated design techniques such as the adjoint method will play an important role in the design our next generation photonic devices. Consequently, familiarity with state-of-the-art photonic design optimization routines are desired. As our group is the design, measurement and data analysis framework is written in python, a strong background with Python is preferred. Knowledge of the CMOS process flow and familiarity with device modeling software such as a Lumerical and prior experience with scripted photonic layout software are required.
