HJF is seeking a Research Scientist (Epidemiologist) to support the Deployment Health Research Department located at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) located in San Diego, CA. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to NHRC.

The incumbent will provide senior level epidemiologic and analytic expertise in the conduct of large health studies. Work includes the planning and implementation of large epidemiologic studies; designing the study methodology; performing statistical analyses for diverse research projects with complex study designs; working with team members to derive an in-depth understanding of the data findings; drafting proposals and writing peer-reviewed publications; supervising and mentoring junior analysts; exercising independent judgment in the resolution of analytical problems while working in a team environment.

Responsibilities:

  1. Participates in all aspects of the research process including survey design, data collection and management, and data analysis and interpretation.
  1. Provides advanced level of research support for study design, implementation, and analyses of deployment health research projects.
  1. Develops protocols and proposals including conducting literature reviews and writing of the scientific background, study methodology, and data analyses. Additionally, writes the interpretation of data findings in the context of ongoing research objectives and publishes findings.
  1. Develops algorithms and writes programs to clean, merge, and update variables/datasets from large epidemiologic studies. Runs programs to create final datasets for this large study program ensuring accuracy.
  1. Performs and helps interpret statistical analyses using SAS including data manipulations, weighting techniques, logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.
  1. Designs and manages numerous research projects simultaneously. Works as a member of a team to conduct scientific research projects and leads cross-functional project teams.
  1. Provides study team with individual and group-level teaching and mentorship, and helps review the programs, analyses, and writing of other team members for scientific rigor and accuracy.
  1. Writes reports and scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed professional journals.
  1. Delivers presentations to the Department and at various national and international scientific and military conferences.
  1. Supervises work assignments and analyses of staff as directed.
  1. Provides knowledge and insight to principal investigator for new study ideas and long- term goals and objectives.
  1. Reviews and remains current with technical and scientific literature in epidemiology and study outcomes of interest.
  1. Provides epidemiological and statistical consulting services and direction for the Department.
  1. Contributes to budget estimations for research related tasks.
  1. Reviews and assesses the work of other professionals in own field.
  1. Provides epidemiological and statistical consulting services and direction for the DoD Center.
  1. Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed.
  1. Assists fellow researchers as needed regarding epidemiological procedures.
  1. Completes other projects as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1.   Knowledge and ability to use and teach complex epidemiologic research methods for assessing the risk of disease in humans due to potential risk factors.

2.   Advanced knowledge of disease etiologies and preventive strategies.

3.   Advanced knowledge in survey methodology and statistics used to collect an interpret data.  

4.   Knowledge and proficiency of statistical and/or mathematical software, such as SAS and MPlus.

5.   Skilled in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphic, email, Power Point, and database software.

6.   Skilled in writing memorandums, correspondence, abstracts, articles, and proposals.

7.   Ability to create presentations and teach both individuals and groups.

8.   Knowledge in grant and proposal writing.

9.   Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.

10. Ability to plan and prioritize work

11. Team player who can work in a large group including both internal and external investigators.

12. Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct work assignments.

13. Excellent written and oral communication skills

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Doctoral level degree in Epidemiology or a doctoral level degree in a related field with demonstrated knowledge and experience within epidemiology and study design/methodology is preferred.

Minimum Experience:    6 to 10 years relevant, progressively responsible experience AND demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing statistical experiments in a team environment.
