Position Summary

The Research Manager is responsible for managing the design and delivery of research and evaluation projects that ensure client expectations are met and surpassed. This position will effectively collaborate with the entire Development Practice team (in DC and internationally) and operate under the direction of his/her supervisor. The Research Manager, with routine supervision and guidance, will be responsible for the timely and high-quality delivery of all elements of assigned projects, including both technical and managerial duties.

Technical work will include contributions to the delivery of international development research and evaluation, such as design, managing fieldwork, data analysis, client reporting, and quality assurance. Project management duties include client servicing, work planning, managing project staff and consultants, subcontractor management, and budget management.

It is expected that this position will pro-actively plan and prioritize multiple projects and be knowledgeable and experienced in research, evaluation, and the field of international development. This position requires up to 20% international travel.

Key Outcomes

  • Manages all aspects of assigned projects with great attention to detail, ensuring that projects are completed successfully on time, on budget, and produce high levels of client satisfaction Negotiates terms of client, subcontractor, and other relevant third-party contracts, and ensures projects' financial efficiency, working closely with senior staff
  • Employs effective and documented quality control procedures throughout the project life cycle – including instrument design, pilot testing, fieldwork oversight, data management, and client reporting
  • Produces original analysis of data collected from primary and secondary sources and high-quality writing on research findings Ensures client confidence and strengthens client relationships through timely and effective communication
  • Actively uses internal working practices and information technology systems, including electronic project management and intranet systems
  • Regularly apprises the assigned supervisor on project status, challenges faced, and solutions proposed

Additional Responsibilities

  • Supports business development through 1) strengthening client relationships, and 2) contributing to proposal writing
  • Keeps informed of strategic issues of relevance within the field of international development Provides strategic input to shape the development of culturally sensitive and innovative research methodologies and client solutions
  • Participates in initiatives to promote the growth and profile of Kantar's Development Practice through networking, conference presentations, and thought leadership

Key Capabilities

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in political or social science, international affairs, or a related field
  • Technical expertise in quantitative and qualitative research and analysis methods
  • At least 4 years of experience in international research and/or evaluation
  • Experience working with US government, foundations, and other development organizations
  • Ability to conduct research in challenging environments, such as amongst hard to reach populations, and in culturally and linguistically diverse contexts
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Excellent written and presenting skills and a confident communicator
  • Ability to collaborate with specialists on multi-country, mixed-methodology projects
  • Data visualization and presentation-building skills
  • Solid project management skills and track record
  • Skill using quantitative analytical software including R, SPSS, Stata, or equivalent and/or qualitative software such as NVivo, Dedoose, or equivalent
  • Technical expertise in one or more development sectors preferred but not required
  • Proficiency in a second language preferred
