Position Description

Purpose:

  • To facilitate the development and implementation of strategic environmental, occupational safety and health and transportation safety and compliance program elements to ensure sustained improvement in workplace safety and enterprise growth and profitability.
  • Regional EHS Manager will focus on one of four primary technical competencies in addition to providing high-level support to regional, territorial, and divisional leadership (i.e., environmental compliance programs, food safety, transportation safety and compliance programs, hazardous materials compliance programs to include fire code compliance, California- and jurisdictional-specific compliance programs (i.e., international EHS regulatory requirements).

Key Accountabilities:

  • Serve as a champion of a proactive, empowered safety culture
  • Remain current and fluent in existing and emerging regulatory requirements that affect the business including FDA regulations and GMP process controls
  • Routinely read and interpret regulatory requirements and practices to advise on or resolve EHS and FDA food safety matters
  • Advise business partners and division management with regard to appropriate execution of EHS programs, FDA regulatory requirements and food safety programs
  • Provide direction and counsel to business partners based on analyses of workplace operations, hazard exposures, and regulatory requirements
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the EHS team and key functional partners to design technical initiatives to manage and mitigate risks, improve compliance, and empower the organization to operate safely
  • Analyze complex EHS and transportation-related data and translate the information into terms meaningful to the field operators
  • Facilitate and manage EHS training opportunities for division and management-level audiences
  • Develop as needed quality training and awareness materials to ensure comprehension in all applicable employees
  • Conduct, facilitate, and train others in hazard recognition, thorough incident and close call investigations, and root cause analyses
  • Assist the facility teams with the compliant management of hazardous materials and hazardous waste to include classifying hazardous materials for transport and characterizing hazardous materials for proper waste disposal
  • Periodically prepare and submit regulatory filings to include Tier II reports, Hazardous Materials Management Plans, and jurisdictional-specific submittals based on independent analyses of the requirements for the assigned facilities
  • Routinely prepare clear, concise, and effective communications to the regional leaders and their teams
  • Regularly assess the physical and process hazards and EHS program execution and coach the local teams to continuously improve
  • Facilitate implementation of transportation and driver safety programs at the local facilities
  • Engage functional partners as needed to develop or improve processes integrated with EHS

Qualifications / Knowledge & Experience:

  • BS/MS degree in occupational safety and health, transportation safety and compliance, environmental science, engineering, or a related field
  • 5 to 8 years experience in EHS and Food Safety or related fields
  • Well-developed skills in verbal and written communications to include effective and relevant EHS and transportation materials
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and timely develop metrics-related documents to facilitate field communication
  • Broad fluency in U.S. federal and state-specific regulatory requirements and in particular well-established familiarity with California-specific requirements and its agencies
  • Thorough understanding of environmental and industrial hygiene requirements such as EPCRA notifications, storm and process water management, proper management of hazardous waste, and air and noise sampling and control measures
  • Strong skill set related to technical data analyses and synthesis
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Established understanding of international EHS regulations, requirements, and program development
  • Certification related to an EHS, FDA and/or transportation safety discipline
  • LEAN, Six Sigma, ISO 14001, or similar EHS Management Systems experience

Decision Rights:

  • Accountable for making independent decisions related to recommendations for correcting workplace hazards and operational processes
  • Accountable for determining priority locations needing additional coaching and support

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Periodically located in a comfortable indoor area with most time sitting in a comfortable position and there is frequent opportunity to move about
  • Routinely in warehouse environments that may be noisy, dusty, and overly warm with extended periods of standing and walking
  • Some lifting up to 25 pounds may be required
  • Typically requires overnight travel more than 50% of the time
