The Refrigeration Engineering Manager, working as part of the Smithfield Engineering staff, will lead the refrigeration engineering discipline for our domestic facilities and provide support, as needed, for our international operations. Willhelp our facilities manage their refrigeration systems by specializing in and focusing on all aspects of industrial refrigeration’s; including but not limited to design, development, implementation of projects, troubleshooting and optimizing existing systems and providing advice on Process Safety Management matters. This role will be responsible for developing, implementing and managing refrigeration standards for our existing and future operations.
Responsibilities and tasks are written as follows:
- Leads facilities in the US and participates in activities of operations in China and Europe as required to ensure operational excellence with ammonia based refrigeration systems.
- Provides direction in identifying, assessing, and formulating solutions to deficiencies within our existing systems.
- Serves as the Technical Expert in industrial refrigeration theory and design, to the extent that they can interfacewith professional refrigeration engineering resources. Has in depth knowledge to validate, or if necessary, challenge elements of system design and application.
- Develops Standard Operating Procedures and provides step by step guidance to Plant Engineers to ensure best in class processes are implemented consistently across the organization.
- Identifies and facilitates the implementation of process improvements and cost savings opportunities aligned withkey business objects.
- Works directly with facilities on projects and issues regarding refrigeration systems.
- Develops designs including selecting equipment, obtaining quotes and scheduling work as requested.
- Interfaces with professional refrigeration engineering resources at high levels during the design and development of projects
- Manages multiple projects in different fields, ensuring adherence to proper protocols and practices.
- Manages the planning and budgeting process for various engineering improvement initiatives, with the goal of meeting project expectations and time requirements.
- Tracks project progress, implementation, and costs.
- Implements new systems and standardizes equipment requirements.
- Ability to manage highly complex projects to include facility start-ups and cross-functional change-management.
- Researches and assists in testing new technology.
- Assesses and understands complex operations and systems to support production management.
- Identifies and corrects deficiencies within existing systems by performing load, charge, and relief calculations.
- Participates in Corporate sponsored training, such as Brown Belt courses at Iowa State.
- Assists facilities with PSM compliance as requested.

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 10+ years related experience and/or training in operations, maintenance and optimization of Ammonia Refrigeration systems; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
- Bachelor's degree; preferred.
- RETA CIRO (Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator) certification, International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration ANSI/IIAR2 certification, Garden City Program Operator II certification, or equivalent certification from another nationally recognized ammonia training program; required.
- Possesses an understanding of HFC & HCFC regulations, including phase out alternatives.
- Possesses a deep theoretical understanding of industrial refrigeration systems and has the ability to apply that knowledge to the roles and responsibilities of the position; including but not limited to single and two stage ammonia systems, low charge systems, central and distributed systems, and cascading systems.
- Electrical experience and troubleshooting in low and high voltage circuits, motors, and controls.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with staff at all levels, including refrigeration staff in the operating facilities and those at the executive level, to provide professional updates and/or presentations.
- Strong reading, math, writing, analytical skill required.
- Performs assigned tasks efficiently with minimum supervision.
- This role has no supervisory responsibilities but may provide guidance for the overall direction and coordination of the Engineering staff at the plant(s).
