  • Job Objective:A brief overview of the position.
    • In collaboration with the Director and Clinical Supervisor, Respiratory Care Services, plans, designs, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive predischarge respiratory care program. Interacts with Respiratory Care, Medical, Nursing, and Case Management staff regarding predischarge patient assessment and discharge teaching for all modes of respiratory care.

  • Qualifications
    • Education
      • Required: Graduate from an AssociateDegree Respiratory Therapy training program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Allied Health Professions (CAAHEP) in collaboration with the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
    • Licensure/Certification
      • Required: RCP, RRT, Certified Asthma Educator from the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB); if eligible for credential, then must obtain credential within one (1) year of hire; American Heart Association BLS and ACLS.
      • Preferred: Smoking Cessation certification.
    • Experience
      • Required: A minimum of five (5) years of acute care hospital experience; a minimum of three (3) years experience providing respiratory care services per established protocol.
      • Preferred: Experience/formal training in respiratory care reimbursement.Minimum of one (1) year in a lead position in an acute care hospital.
  • Essential Responsibilities
    • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
    • Promotes and provides a safe and effective Respiratory Care to patients.
    • Performs patient assessment and develops an appropriate plan of care according to hospital policy and protocols.
    • Demonstrates the care and operation of respiratory therapy equipment according to technical specifications and application of equipment.
    • Performs routine respiratory care procedures as appropriate for clinical patient care areas according to hospital policy or protocols.
    • Performs respiratory care procedures as appropriate for critical care areas according to hospital policy or protocols.
    • Performs charting and documentation that is consistently complete, accurate, legible and informative.
    • Provides teaching and educational material to the patient and/or significant others concerning respiratory therapy.
    • Responds to emergency situations and provides appropriate and timely treatments.
    • Provides specialized care (e.g. bronchoscopy, trans-tracheal oxygenation).
    • Self-sufficient in seeking resource; demonstrates significant problem solving skills with respiratory modalities in the clinical setting.
    • Ability to organize the workload and set priorities to meet time requirements.
    • Complies with policies; uses discretion and follows through with areas of concern.
    • Adheres to hospital infection control guidelines, body mechanics and safety, equipment usage and care.
    • Demonstrates adaptability to working overtime and altering work schedule when priority respiratory therapy affects immediate patient care.
    • Participates in activities resulting in professional and departmental growth.
    • Attends continuing education programs to promote professional growth.
    • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
    • Maintains a high productivity level.
    • Seeks and completes training in, and maintains current knowledge of payor requirements for home therapy and educates patients/families regarding same.
    • In collaboration with the Manager, Respiratory Care Services, assures compliance with departmental, facility, local, state, federal, and accreditation standards, rules, and regulations.
    • Actively participates in paper and onsite inspections.
    • In collaboration with the Manager, Respiratory Care Services, plans, designs, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive predischarge respiratory care program which reflects current practice as defined by (e.g.) the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).
    • Interacts with Respiratory Care, medical, nursing, and Case Management staff regarding patient assessment and discharge teaching for all modes of respiratory care.
    • Performs diagnostic testing to determine patients’ needs for respiratory care modalities postdischarge.
    • Serves as the Asthma Educator with a disease management focus.
    • In collaboration with the Manager, Respiratory Care Services, assess program efficiency and effectiveness, and implements appropriate changes in program operations.
    • Collaborates with vendors to assure that patients’ postdischarge medical equipment/supply needs are met.
    • Participates in Performance Improvement and Quality Assessment activities and interdisciplinary teams as appropriate.
    • Able to prioritize accordingly and maintains a high level of organization.
    • Completes tasks in allotted time at the end of each shift.
    • Assists the Manager, Respiratory Care Services with writing, implementing and updating policies and procedures.
    • Performs other duties as requested.
