R&D Test Engineer (R&D Engineer 2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico
What You Will Do
Work in the Weapons Test Engineering group (Q-14) of the Weapon Stockpile Modernization Division (Q) as a R&D; Test Engineer in charge of designing and executing tests in support of the weapons program.
Testing activities require working in a team environment with other engineers, scientists, and technicians within LANL, DOE, DoD, and other institutions to perform successful test operations that include designing tests and some associated equipment in order to meet testing requirements, writing test plans and technical procedures, ensuring test equipment is available and properly setup, working with appropriate personnel to execute tests, ensuring test data is collected and analyzed, and writing test reports.
Specific test environments include but are not limited to shock, vibration, rotation, impact, modal, load/deflection testing, pressure, thermal including fire, and confined high explosive driven tests. Compliance with LANL and facility safety and security practices, and delivering accurate test results in a team effort are central to all testing efforts.
Performance of job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, high explosives, and other hazardous materials.
The ability to provide clear, timely, and technically accurate direction to test support technicians is part of the job duties. Testing operations are conducted at LANL and at other institutions and test facilities including Sandia National Laboratories.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Design engineering tests to meet testing requirements
Set up test equipment for tests
Author test plans, technical procedures and test reports
Execute tests that may include High Explosives, radioactive material and other hazardous materials
Adapt to evolving R&D; requirements while meeting safety, security, compliance, and schedule imperatives.
Mentor early career staff, postdocs, and students.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of test engineering including test design, planning, preparation, execution, data reduction and analysis, customer interfacing, and documenting of experimental work.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge in the use of specialized engineering software for data acquisition and analysis, such as MATLAB, LabView, Origin, or other similar software.
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of engineering design and analysis of components, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) tools, and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methods.
Experience with fabrication methods and equipment for obtaining/measuring required component attributes.
Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and with changing priorities while delivering multiple products on schedule.
Ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently or as part of a team with other engineers, scientists, and technicians.
Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers.
Demonstrated knowledge of dynamic measurements, measurement techniques, instrumentation, and digital signal processing techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge of experimental and analytical modal analysis including modal analysis test methods, curve fitting, input and response location optimization and extraction of modal parameters.
Demonstrated knowledge of transfer path analysis, dynamic sub-structuring and analytical or numerical modeling of dynamic systems.
Experience with operations or tests involving high explosives.
Demonstrated experience in nuclear weapons testing and qualification.
Demonstrated operational testing experience in environments with high explosives.
Experience with quality assurance implementation in a test environment.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):Sitting, standing, climbing stairs, reaching overhead and down, bending, stooping, and lifting 20-30 pounds.
Work Environment:Position involves working around and possibly handling high explosives as well as being near sources of non-ionizing radiation.
Education:A minimum of a BS in engineering (MS or PhD preferred) from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university program is required; advanced degree in engineering preferred.
