The main function of this position is to support the Intelligent Machine Tool Group and affiliated groups with a focus on process development for precision components. The group efforts focus on building the science base for machine tools and translating those results into innovations for commercial and defense applications. Projects often integrate additive and subtractive operations, hardware and software, sensors, and data analysis. Projects will require creative solutions to challenging problems in a dynamic fast-paced environment. You should have significant experience with an understanding of elements of new process development, machine precision, machine tool use, software development, and a variety of manufacturing processes. Technical publishing of research results is required.
Major Responsibilities / Duties :
Job duties include supporting the research organization as a project lead or senior researcher, managing medium to larger size research projects, supporting the development of significant new research proposals, supporting new client relationships, and reporting. Your projects will be complex, multi-year activities, including significant interaction with other groups, other sections, and other divisions within ORNL, and with industrial partners and federal agencies. Managing, deliverables, reports, and personnel within deadlines are requirements.
Technical challenges will include the specification of process plans, the design and conduct of original experimental research, and the development of original or new solutions. Projects will include integration or coordination of disciplines and staff, and the application of considerable judgment and professional competency. Group activities focus on better use of existing machine tools, deployment of new technologies, design and development of new machine tools for new applications, and support of technology deployment in new workforces.
This position requires a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Experience in the machine tool industry is highly desirable, as is significant process development experience. You must possess at least six years of experience in an industrial environment, and at least two years of experience in a research environment. You should have experience with machine tool-related experimental equipment, and with a variety of manufacturing software including MasterCAM, and Vericut.
