What Your Job Will Be Like

Sandia National Laboratories' Integrated Military Systems Pathfinder Technologies group needs a controls engineer to support the research and development of autonomous sensing and flight systems. As a successful candidate for this job, you will conceptualize, design, implement, and test controls algorithms for multi-platform autonomous sensors. The sensors perform object detection, tracking and recognition; navigation and geolocation; motion control; sensor cueing, tasking and scheduling; and communications. You will work with leading experts in sensors, signal processing, machine learning, and control systems; within the Group, throughout Sandia's diverse organizations, and with partners from the US Department of Defense and private industry. The successful candidate will work as an expert in advanced control systems; and build on his/her competency in flight dynamics or aerodynamics, satellite navigation, sensor systems (e.g. radar/lidar, RF, infrared, optical, inertial, electromagnetic, etc), servo-actuators, algorithm development, and programming. The Group/teams will also benefit from the candidate's expertise in one or more of the following: sensor tasking, sensor fusion, signal/image processing, computer vision, target detection, signature matching, pattern recognition, or artificial intelligence. Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications We Require

  • A bachelor's and advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or another relevant science or engineering discipline. A Bachelor's degree in one of the above disciplines, combined with four years of relevant professional experience, may qualify.
  • Expertise and significant experience with control systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q clearance.

Qualifications We Desire

Ideally, your background will also include some of the following:

  • Experience with flight control, navigation and guidance, aerodynamics, space flight dynamics, or servo-actuators.
  • Significant experience in programming languages such as C/C++/C#, MATLAB, Python, Java, IDL, etc. (Put on your resume a link to your GitHub or another site showcasing your codes.)
  • Experience with aerospace sensors such as radar, lidar, EOIR, FMV, inertial sensors, and imaging modalities.
  • Experience with image and signal processing,
  • Experience with artificial intelligence (machine learning or deep learning), and real-time processing algorithms.
  • Excellent communication and teaming skills.
