Job DescriptionPURPOSE OF POSITIONUnder general supervision of the Director of Psychology or a Psychologist, Level III, the Psychologist, Level II, with broad latitude for independent action or decision, performs highly difficult and responsible professional work and/or supervisory work of ordinary professional difficulty and responsibility in the field of psychology. In addition to performing duties of Assignment Level I at a more difficult and responsible level, also performs the following tasks:
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: - Supervises the work of subordinates in the areas of diagnosis, therapy, and research, and coordinates their activities with the work or other professional worker.
- Administers therapy in difficult atypical cases which may include individual, group, and family counseling and/or therapy.
- Coordinates training programs and conducts case conferences and seminars for training purposes.
- Gives formal and informal instruction to psychologists and psychologists-in-training on diagnostic, therapeutic, and research techniques.
- May contribute to formulation of hypotheses and details of research design.
- May offer psychological consultation services to other City agencies.
May be required to provide psychological consultation services on non-clinical issues.
Minimum QualificationsSPECIAL NOTE # = Additional Requirements for Assignment Level II (Effective September 25, 1998)
A. A Doctoral Degree in clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology, awarded upon completion of a Doctoral Program in Psychology registered by the New York State Department of Education and designated as licensure qualifying; and
B. One additional year of satisfactory full-time experience, either as a Psychologist for the City of New York, or in a supervisory capacity in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology or Neuro-Psychology in an approved agency or institution. Employees who complete their Doctoral Degree requirements on or after October 1, 1992 must have at least one year of qualifying experience gained after the completion of all Doctoral Degree requirements; and

* Effective September 25, 1998, appointments to Assignment Level II require 1) a Ph.D. as outlined in A above; and 2) one year of qualifying experience as outlined in B above.
C. License Requirements for Assignment Level II
1. In the New York City Departments of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and
Alcoholism Services, Police and Fire, and those programs functionally transferred to the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation from the New York City Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Alcoholism Services, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education.
2. In agencies not noted in C. (1.) above, a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the New York State Department of Education within one year of the date of assignment. At the discretion of the appointing agency, the period to obtain the license may be extended for up to six months for employees who fail to obtain the license within one year of their assignment. Once obtained, this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
