Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Project Manager - Electrical SME serves as the company's primary Electrical Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, operations, maintenance, warranty, estimating, business development, and project execution activities across multiple projects.

This position is primarily office-based and provides technical leadership, project management support, engineering oversight, troubleshooting expertise, field technical assistance, constructability reviews, risk mitigation, and operational support for power generation, industrial, utility, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects.

The Project Manager - Electrical SME works closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Commissioning Managers, Engineering Teams, Procurement Personnel, Operations Personnel, and Business Development Teams to ensure electrical systems are designed, installed, tested, commissioned, and operated safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.

The position requires periodic travel to project sites to support troubleshooting, commissioning, startup, relay testing, electrical investigations, equipment failures, root cause analysis, operational readiness reviews, warranty support, and client technical assistance.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Serve as the company's primary electrical technical resource supporting all phases of project execution.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, turnover, warranty, and operations phases.
  • Review electrical engineering deliverables including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, relay protection schemes, grounding plans, cable schedules, motor control center drawings, switchgear drawings, and equipment specifications.
  • Perform constructability reviews and identify opportunities to improve safety, quality, schedule performance, operability, maintainability, and cost.
  • Support project teams with planning, forecasting, risk management, schedule development, and electrical scope coordination.
  • Support proposal development, EPC pursuits, staffing plans, estimates, and execution strategies.
  • Participate in project kickoff meetings, design reviews, HAZOP reviews, constructability reviews, commissioning planning sessions, and startup readiness reviews.
  • Support development of electrical commissioning procedures, energization plans, startup procedures, and turnover packages.
  • Monitor project progress and identify technical risks that may impact safety, schedule, quality, budget, or operational readiness.
  • Provide technical review of subcontractor scopes of work, vendor proposals, equipment specifications, and purchase requisitions.
  • Support project controls and provide technical input for scheduling, cost forecasting, and resource planning.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to project personnel.

FIELD TROUBLESHOOTING AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT
  • Travel to project sites as required to investigate electrical system issues and provide technical assistance.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts involving generators, transformers, switchgear, MCCs, protective relays, VFDs, UPS systems, batteries, PLCs, DCS interfaces, substations, and plant distribution systems.
  • Perform root cause analyses for equipment failures, operational events, startup issues, and reliability concerns.
  • Develop corrective action plans and support implementation of permanent solutions.
  • Support warranty investigations and resolution of equipment and system deficiencies.
  • Provide recommendations to improve plant reliability, maintainability, and operational performance.
  • Support outage planning, maintenance activities, and operational troubleshooting efforts.

COMMISSIONING AND STARTUP SUPPORT
  • Support Commissioning and Startup teams during planning and execution phases.
  • Review electrical test procedures, energization plans, relay testing plans, and startup sequences.
  • Support system turnover, walkdowns, punch list resolution, and readiness assessments.
  • Participate in electrical backfeed activities, equipment energization, first-fire activities, synchronization, reliability testing, and commercial operation milestones.
  • Provide technical support during integrated plant testing, performance testing, emissions testing, and warranty periods.
  • Support development and implementation of commissioning best practices and lessons learned.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND ESTIMATING SUPPORT
  • Support Business Development personnel during project pursuits and client presentations.
  • Review technical requirements and assist with proposal strategy development.
  • Develop electrical labor estimates, staffing plans, execution plans, and commissioning support estimates.
  • Review EPC bid packages and identify technical risks and opportunities.
  • Participate in estimate reviews and project pursuit planning activities.

SAFETY AND QUALITY
  • Promote and support the company's safety culture and Zero Incident philosophy.
  • Participate in incident investigations involving electrical systems and equipment.
  • Review electrical safety plans, lockout/tagout procedures, energized work permits, and arc flash requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NEC, NESC, IEEE, NETA, NERC, and project-specific requirements.
  • Support quality assurance and quality control programs related to electrical installation, testing, and commissioning.
  • Set a personal example of safe behavior and professional conduct.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Minimum ten years of experience supporting electrical systems within power generation, industrial, utility, EPC, commissioning, startup, operations, maintenance, or construction environments.
  • Demonstrated experience with medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.
  • Experience with protective relays, switchgear, substations, generators, transformers, and industrial electrical systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and operational readiness activities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Strong electrical troubleshooting and root cause analysis capabilities.
  • Thorough understanding of power generation and industrial electrical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, studies, contracts, and technical documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to support multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, and related software applications.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% to 40% of the time as project requirements dictate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Must be capable of accessing active industrial construction and operating facilities.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, stairs, and access elevated work areas.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Must be capable of walking long distances through industrial facilities and construction sites.
  • Must be able to travel by automobile and commercial airline as required.

HOURS:

This position is a Full-Time position scheduled to work typically 50 hours per week. Schedule is subject to projects requirements.

TRAVEL:

Travel required as needed to project support.
