We are seeking a Program Director - Surgery to:

  • Partner with faculty, providers, and staff to drive high-value clinical growth across the Department of Surgery.  
  • Propose new and revised programs to optimally position the Department of Surgery and UW Health.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive geographic strategy with the goal of increasing the population of patients from Wisconsin and the larger region served by UW Health.


Minimum - Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred - Master’s degree in Health Care Administration, Business Administration, Public/Non-profit Administration or relevant field.

Work Experience:

Minimum - Three (3) years of relevant experience in the management and administration of a large academic program, preferably one with multiple missions that require integration.

Preferred - Program/business development experience in an academic department of surgery or other area of academic medicine.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Broad knowledge of modern health care administration, principles and practices within a managed care environment and/or an academic medical center.
  • In-depth knowledge of managerial accounting for health care organizations and of hospital and clinical operations.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques used in negotiation as applied to service contracts and equipment purchasing.
  • Effective organizational, planning and project management abilities.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with physicians and other key staff.
  • Experience in financial and programmatic presentations.
  • Effective analytical ability in order to develop and analyze options, recommend solutions to and solve complex problems and issues.
  • Demonstrated history of positive and collaborative relationships with physicians.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary: Ability to lift up to 10 pounds maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and small tools.  Although a sedentary job is defined as one, which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.  Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.


Work Schedule:

This full time, 40 hours per week, position will have shifts scheduled Monday - Friday between the hours of 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Hours may vary based on the needs of the department.
