Overview

The Program Director directs the operation of all health and physical education and teen programs at a specific branch with primary concern for the programming leagues and activities. Plans, develops, implements, coordinates, supervises and evaluates teen and health and physical education program staff. Provides healthy habit options and sports leagues for both youth and teens.

Responsibilities

Prepare Youth for Success

  1. Ensure programs, services and activities prepare youth and teens 5 to 18 for success. Provide guidance and role modeling to youth and teens.
  2. Assists the Branch Manager in planning and implementation of the strategic plan by posting a schedule of events and providing programs which are instructional, competitive, and cooperative for active and drop in youth and teens. Ensures that programs begin and end on time.
  3. Ensure quality improvement by monitoring and evaluating program achievement against target goals, recommending modifications that respond to member needs and interests and participating in weekly branch staff meetings.
  4. Conduct daily physical education activities that develop fundamental motor skills in a variety of sports. Incorporating Healthy Habits outcome measures when offering programs. Provide one-on-one assistance to youth and teens who need individual guidance in fitness and motor skills development.
  5. Create and adhere to a diverse schedule of gym games, leagues and events including scheduling guest speakers and field trips. Publicize gym events such as leagues and special events through the use of bulletin boards, signs, social media and handouts and establish a system of recognition about youth and teens and their gym-related achievements.
  6. Ensures that teens actively participate in a variety of programs and activities; seek advice and guidance from staff about problems; and receive caring, respect and recognition for their efforts.
  7. Plans and oversees the administration of teen programs and activities that support the Boys & Girls Clubs movement’s “Youth Development Strategy and Formula for Impact” Establishes objectives consistent with the organizational goals and mission.
  8. Implements and directs daily teen programs and activities in the teen center. Demonstrates dynamic leadership to assure conduct, safety and development of teens.
  9. Provides information to teens about educational opportunities including the scholarship program, encourages educational achievement and continuing education.
  10. Assists with/implements the Leader In Training Program to provide job training and employment opportunities to teens. The program will include resume writing, completing job applications, career development, interviewing skills and job skills
  11. In coordination with Branch Manager will select an eligible candidate for Youth of the Year to represent respective club at all levels.

Health and Safety

  1. Manage gym, outdoor and teen facilities and ensure a productive work environment, maintaining an inventory of all program equipment and supplies in good working order. {Program space, storage areas and office}.
  2. Ensures that areas are safe, well ventilated and well lit.
  3. Ensures a healthy and wholesome environment for youth and teen members enforcing club rules appropriately and consistently; encouraging members to keep areas clean; holding youth and teens accountable for behavior; recording and/or reporting incidents to supervisors.
  4. Recommend requisitions, as necessary; controlling expenditures against monthly budget.

Supervision

  1. Recruit, train and supervise part-time staff and assigned volunteers, coaches; provide ongoing feedback; and identify and support development opportunities.
  2. Prepare weekly reports for the Branch Manager and grants manager as required.
  3. Ensure that all leagues and other health and physical education activities stay within the established budget.
  4. Manages administrative functions of the teen center and Gym areas and assigned resources. Ensures proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted, breakdown of daily participation figures, notable achievements and any problems or issues.
  5. Discusses personnel issues with manager. Assures that staff follows organizational procedures and policies; provides ongoing feedback; and identify and support development opportunities.
  6. Promotes programs to teens by posting a daily schedule, announcements of upcoming events and, working with the Marketing and Public Relations Manager, dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers, and media.
  7. Evaluates programs on a continual basis and ensures programs and activities address the gender and cultural diversity of youth and teens.
  8. Establishes an outreach program by maintaining contact with external community groups, school faculty, teens, school officials, parents and others to assist in member recruitment, to provide information about services, to form collaborations, and encourage community mobilization in regard to teen issues.
  9. Implements and manages the Keystone Club, the Teen Council, the Youth of the Year programs and other programs as needed.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. May participate in additional special programs and/or events
  2. May be required to drive Branch van.
  3. Evenings/weekend work involved.
  4. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Four yeardegree from an accredited college or university, or a minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising health and physical education and teen activities. (preferred)
  • Ability to motivate youth and teens and manage behavior issues.
  • Ability to deal with the general public.
  • Ability to organize and supervise youth and teens in a safe environment.
  • Nights and weekends may be required.
  • Due to our insurance requirements, the candidate needs to be at least 21 years old with a valid driver's license
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management abilities.
