Melissa & Doug, the toy company committed to nurturing childhood wonder, is looking for a Director, Product Design Innovation. In this role, you’ll be an essential part of our mission to inspire creativity and imagination in children throughout the world with thoughtfully designed toys that spark free play.
You will drive product innovation for incremental growth and oversee a team of product designers developing a vast range of products and toys. You should be incredibly creative, organized, and have experience managing. Your background includes launching innovative product lines, working with marketing trends, external design firms and new factories. You should be an excellent communicator, able to express your design vision to your team and to management. You should have an innate sense of form, the ability to design age-appropriate products, and an understanding of what makes products market-viable.
You will report directly to the Head of Product and work closely with Graphic and Packaging Designers as well as our Marketing, Engineers, Product Development and Quality Assurance teams. You should be a self-motivator, able to lead by example and inspire the team through your passion for our brand and mission. A background designing children’s products and /or toys is a definite plus.
Drive innovative product as well as refreshing base items in response to market trends
Lead a team of product designers to develop a range of children’s products in a wide range of materials including wood, plastic, metal and fabric.
Collaborate with senior leadership to drive the creation and execution of a comprehensive product strategy
Develop entire collections of consumer-centric products
Coordinate with Licensors when creating Licensed product
Drive a culture of innovation and product differentiation
Manage project schedules and budgets
Develop accurate 2D and 3D product specifications and drawings, accounting for cost, ergonomic, safety and manufacturing limitations.
Conduct market research and translate marketing brand direction into viable product lines
Manage design standards to ensure a high execution of product
Communicate extensively throughout the design process with Graphic and Packaging Designers, Marketing, Engineers, Product Development and Quality Assurance teams.
BFA or equivalent degree in Industrial or Product Design
5+ years of consumer product or toy design experience
2+ leading and developing creative teams
Knowledge of wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes, especially plastics
Thorough understanding of design for manufacturing with knowledge of capabilities and limitations
Superb ideation and conceptual skills
Excellent sketching skills to quickly communicate ideas visually
Strong awareness of global design and/or toy trends
Strong creative problem solving and analytical skills
Understanding of safety, ergonomic and design needs of children
3D CAD: Expert knowledge of Solidworks and ability to render in Keyshot
2D CAD: Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator and Photoshop
Strong organizational skills, including developing plans to reach final deliverables
Superb technical drawing skills combined with a strong attention to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams
Ability to work in PC-based environment.
