Position Summary...

What you'll do...

We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to join Compass Engineering team. This hands-on role requires exceptional coding skills, a passion for technology and engineering excellence, and the ability to guide and mentor a team of engineers. You will play a pivotal role in defining and maintaining our technical architecture, ensuring alignment with business goals and scalability requirements.

About Team:

The Emerging Tech team is passionate about solving customer and associate problems with the newest technologies. The team is responsible for creating breakthrough capabilities, delivering frictionless experiences and making these technologies easily available to thousands of Walmart developers and 2.2 million associates. The applications and services built on these capabilities are used by hundreds of millions of customers daily. We are building new platform to bring physical and digital world together.

What you'll do:
  • Leads the discovery phase of large software engineering projects by collaborating with cross-functional teams to determine project strategy; interpreting strategy into sustainable architecture and solutions; driving prototype development to ensure concept is feasible; and implementing prototypes to validate projects.
  • Leads project teams for engineering projects by providing direction regarding project plan; identifying short- and long-term solutions and timelines; providing guidance regarding project issues or roadblocks; reviewing and approving proposed solutions; implementing new architectural patterns; and performing design and code reviews of changes.
  • Leads medium- to large-scale, complex, cross-functional projects for Engineering by collaborating with cross-functional teams to determine project requirements; translating requirements into platforms and mobile solutions for multiple operating systems (for example, iPhone, Android); gathering requested information (for example, design documents, product requirements, wire frames); writing and developing code; developing user interface solutions; conducting testing to ensure solution is functional; communicating project status and roadblocks to team members and stakeholders; determining solutions to issues; enhancing design to prevent reoccurrence of defects across multiple devices; ensuring on-time delivery; and collaborating with project managers to provide guidance on project implementation plan.
  • Drives the execution of multiple business plans and projects by identifying customer and operational needs; developing and communicating business plans and priorities; removing barriers and obstacles that impact performance; providing resources; identifying performance standards; measuring progress and adjusting performance; accordingly, developing contingency plans; and demonstrating adaptability and supporting continuous learning.
  • Provides supervision and development opportunities for associates by selecting and training; mentoring; assigning duties; building a team-based work environment; establishing performance expectations and conducting regular performance evaluations; providing recognition and rewards; coaching for success and improvement; and ensuring diversity awareness.
  • Promotes and supports company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity by training and providing direction to others in their use and application; ensuring compliance with them; and utilizing and supporting the Open Door Policy.
  • Ensures business needs are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost effectiveness;
  • and participating in and supporting community outreach events.


What you'll bring:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related technical field or Bachelor's degree in CS or related field 15+ years relevant experience
  • Experience with more than one programming language (Go, Python Java, Kotlin, Scala, Clojure, JavaScript, preferred)
  • Experience with Azure, GCP, AWS, or private cloud
  • Experience with Event Driven Architectures and constituent technologies (e.g., Kafka, Event Hubs, PubSub) and patterns (Event Sourcing, CQRS, etc.)
  • Experience with JMS/AMQP (ActiveMQ, RabbitMQ, Azure Service Bus, etc.)
  • Experience with the serverless framework and serverless architecture.
  • Experience with microservices architectures and constituent technologies.
  • Experience with containerization and container platforms. (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, etc.).
  • Experience with distributed NoSQL databases (Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.)
  • Large scale distributed systems experience, including scalability and fault tolerance.
  • Experience in mentoring engineers and influencing other engineers across the organization
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Good problem-solving attitude and analytical skills

Preferred Additional Skills:
  • Experience with high performance networking (Quic, network layer optimization) or Realtime transaction protocols/methods (HTTP2, Server Sent Events, MQTT, WebSockets, gRPC, RTP, SIP)
  • Experience with geoSpatial technologies (Spatial4j, Spatial Queries, Quad Trees, etc)

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00-$286,000.00

Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
