SUMMARY OF POSITION:The Principal Manufacturing Engineer responsibilities include but are not limited to support of the day to day operations of the North Haven facility. This includes being the project lead in cost savings, capital spending, component redesigns, manufacturing process improvements, instrument trouble shooting, and product line transfers. The Principal Mfg. Engineer must be able to communicate technically with various suppliers for Medtronic to support troubleshooting, supplier development programs and tooling replacement programs to ensure quality components will continually be received timely at the manufacturing sites. Some tooling and processing experience required. The Principal Mfg. Engineer will need to work closely with Medtronic manufacturing sites involving production and all support functions.Work under the direction of the Manager Manufacturing Engineering in a fast paced collaborative environment supporting program initiatives and compliant with company best practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:• Career development of engineering staff• Manufacturing and Project Engineering lead for activities in accordance with standard operating procedures• Key participant in DFMEA, PFMEA, and CTQ processes assuring specifications are well defined and documented.• Assure production requirements are achieved for component and assembly tooling specifications, supplier selection, and qualification.• Conceptual leader for technology advances associated with tooling and process development.• Communicate and coordinate activities with multiple functional groups both within and outside of operations
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:• Some travel to equipment suppliers may be required.
A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs manufacturing processes, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing, machining and material handling.
  • Designs arrangement of machines within plant facilities to ensure most efficient and productive layout.
  • Designs sequence of operations and specifies procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment and other functions that affect product performance.
  • Adapts machine or equipment design to factory and production conditions.
  • May incorporate inspection and test requirements into the production plan.
  • Inspects performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to verify their efficiency, and investigates and initiates corrective action of problems and deficiencies to ensure product quality.
  • Develops manufacturing processes that are applicable to statistical process control, and may develop those techniques.
  • Provides guidance to engineering regarding design concepts and specification requirements to best utilize equipment and manufacturing techniques.
  • Ensures processes and procedures are in compliance with regulations.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degreerequired
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Education: BS Engineering or Equivalent MS Engineering

Skills/Competencies:- Previous experience with managing direct reports - Dynamic, positive attitude
- Strong communication, manufacturing process, product industrialization and leadership skills.

Skills/Qualifications: •Knowledge of Lean and/or 6 Sigma •Knowledge of GD&T•Knowledge of DFMEA and PFMEA •Knowledge of Maintenance Uptime Elements•Practical Knowledge of Maintenance SOP’s in a regulated environment, (FDA 21 CFR Part 820 or similar)•Strong Interpersonal Skills•Strong Computer skills•Knowledge and Experience with product assembly and Manufacturing Methods/equipment (E.G. Ultrasonic Welders, Crimping, Molding, MIM, Leak Testers, Machine Controls and Vision Systems, packaging equipment•Knowledge and Experience with material process and testing. •Engineering and Problem solving tools: MINITAB, SIX SIGMA, DOE, GR&R, CAPA, CAD, DMAIC•Experience with DFMA and Lean manufacturing tools.•Excellent organization, Planning, Computer skills, Technical writing, Communication and Presentation skills.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE:•Close-working interface with inter-departmental functions in support of program initiatives.
