What will you be responsible for?
The Principal Engineer, Tailings & Dams, collaborates with the Senior Director, Global Tailings Management within the Technical Services Team based in Denver, Colorado. The role will provide professional leadership and expert tailings storage facility (TSF) and water storage dam governance, mentorship and operational support to our global mining operations.
The Principal Engineer, Tailings & Dams, will serve as a company resource for geotechnical and hydrologic related information and analysis, providing centralized technical services across our global portfolio. The position will work as part of our Corporate Tailings Management Team, which is part of the Corporate Resource Evaluation & Mine Planning (REMP) team, to ensure that multi-functional constraints, goals, opportunities and risks are accounted for, and a full and transparent path forward is mapped for existing operations, legacy sites, stage-gate projects, and new mines.
The Principal Engineer, Tailings & Dams, works with the operations to increase bench strength of our Responsible Tailings Facility Engineers/Persons (RTFEs/RTFPs) and other less experienced members of the team supporting tailings and dam management.

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like!
- Support implementation and oversight of detailed third-party review processes, including Independent Technical Review Boards (ITRBs), Stewardship Programs, and periodic comprehensive dam safety reviews (DSRs), including supporting sites in addressing identified recommendations
- Develop and implement tools/processes to provide improved management of our TSFs and other site dams, including ensuring that relevant company specifications, guidelines and proposed standard methodologies are applied.
- Lead or support risk assessments for Newmont’s TSFs and dams, including providing support with implementation of risk mitigation action plans.
- Act as a corporate liaison with engineering firms (e.g., Engineer of Record) providing technical review and mentorship for operations and major projects related to geotechnical, hydrological and hydrogeological data collection, analysis, design, construction and operational management, including corporate review of documentation to support the stage-gate process
- Provide mentorship and oversight to operating sites and projects for critical planning of site tailings and water management with a long-term view, including evaluation and implementation of improved technologies or innovative solutions and support to multiple accounts analyses
- Mentor, train and develop team members with regard to tailings management and dam safety

Your training, skills & experience checklist
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil/Geological Engineering, Geological Engineering or related Engineering field from an accredited curriculum with courses in Soil Mechanics
- Master’s Degree in Civil/Geotechnical, Geological Engineering or related Engineering field preferred
- Knowledge in the principles and practices of civil, geological, geotechnical and hydrological engineering or a related field of science or engineering
- Minimum 15 years of proven experience
- Consulting experience is preferred
- Experience in tailings and water dam design, construction, management, operation and closure
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated strong technical writing, group presentation and communication skills
- Strong verbal communication skills, with ability to communicate to a diversely-educated audience
- Ability to build and maintain strong communication networks with peers, RTFEs/RTFPs, project managers, mine manager, and JV partner representatives
- Overseas work experience in 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries
- Experience in project evaluation from concept to ongoing operations and closure stages
- Well-networked into industry specialists and consultants
- Strong problem solving skills
- Knowledge of appropriate software (e.g., MS Office, AutoCAD, SLIDE, SEEP/W, UTEXAS, FSCONSOL, GOLDSIM, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, FLAC, PLAXIS, MUCK3D) and geotechnical and hydrological data analysis
- Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software
- A high level of cultural awareness and sensitivity
- Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
- Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety of yourself and others
Working conditions & location
- The position is located in the Denver corporate office
- Performance of the work requires travel (up to 25%) to domestic and international operations. Travel can be at a moment’s notice to overseas or domestic locations, including Newmont and non-Newmont locations and greenfield sites
