The Dickman laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support studies aimed at identifying the molecules and elucidating the mechanisms that achieve and maintain the stability of neural function and in determining how dysfunction in these processes may contribute to human disease. The position is based in the Neurobiology section of the department of Biological Sciences, on the beautiful University Park Campus of USC, close to downtown LA and within easy commuting distance of the west side of LA and Pasadena. The Neurobiology section is part of a vibrant community with many opportunities for enrichment and interaction.

Position responsibilities

There is an open post-doctoral position in the laboratory of Dion Dickman at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.

The Dickman laboratory is focused on the fundamental question: How do synapses maintain stable functionality in the face of perturbations during development, growth, maturation, experience, and disease? Outcomes from our work will define the molecular principles that govern how synaptic properties are maintained within stable physiological ranges to permit coherent information transfer in the nervous system, and illuminate how defects in homeostatic signaling contribute to the etiology of neurological disease.

We use the Drosophila neuromuscular junction as a model glutamatergic synapse. This powerful system provides unparalleled opportunities to interrogate the genes and mechanisms that orchestrate the homeostatic control of synaptic function. The laboratory uses an integrated approach that centers on using sophisticated molecular genetics, quantitative and dynamic imaging, and electrophysiology. Two major areas of research focus are presynaptic homeostatic modulation of potentiation and inhibition.


Requirements Candidates must have a PhD in a related scientific discipline (Neuroscience, Genetics, Cell Biology, etc) and at least one first author publication.
