Job Description Summary:
This job is intended to provide support for individuals engaged in postdoctoral study after the attainment of the doctoratedegrees.Applying general professional level knowledge and principals of research, incumbent performs duties requiring the identification and analysis of various factors and independent judgment and discretion to recommend best course of action. Incumbent proceeds on own initiative in compliance with policies, procedures, and practices, but receives guidance or expertise from supervisor or higher-level staff when needed.

The Division on Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education (DBASSE) focuses the knowledge, analytical tools, and methods of the behavioral and social sciences on some of the nation's most pressing issues in efforts to understand them and to contribute to their solution. Our areas of expertise include (but are not limited to) anthropology, child development, demography, economics, education, history, law, gerontology, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, and statistics.
With a focus on learning and exposure to a wide range of activities, provides scientific and technical support in the research area and assists in administering organizational projects or programs. Generates or contributes to scientific theories, research methodology, analytic or interpretive procedures. Designs and conducts scientific studies under general supervision. Develops pertinent background research which contributes to a greater understanding of conditions, issues and trends impacting on a wide range of projects, subjects and topics. Drafts background papers. Prepares data for use in reports. Edits report material developed by committee members and senior staff. Manages related databases. May assist with administrative duties related to projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
The Postdoctoral Fellow under the guidance of senior DBASSE staff:
1. Develops information sources. Reads, analyzes, and evaluates data and literature. Assists in planning and implementing meetings. Synthesizes information for various project meetings. Develops background materials. May develop and manage related databases.
2. Writes technical papers and summaries.
3. Attends and participates in meetings and workshops. Assists with background of articles related to science communication for the journal Issues in Science and Technology
4. Assists in administering program/project activities. Communicates with committee members and external program/project contacts. Facilitates the flow of information among members, consultants, program/project sponsors, and staff. Prepares reports on program/project activities.
5. Organizes meetings. Creates agendas, invites presenters and participants, oversees meeting logistics, and prepares written summaries.
6. May update and maintain web page and prepare newsletters, progress reports, and other materials.
7. May perform related administrative duties, including assisting with meeting planning and organizing materials for meetings, and corresponding with committee members.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of scientific, technical, or policy issues related to science communication or a related disciplines such as risk communication. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. Demonstrated proficiency in conveying scientific/technical/policy information in verbal and written form is desirable.
Minimum Education: Ph.D. in related field
Preferred Qualifications: Ph. D. in science communication or a relevant discipline such as risk communication, health communication, or environmental communication
