Zurich North America is currently looking for an experienced Underwriting Portfolio Manager to join our Casualty Portfolio team. This group engages the various NACI Business Unit segments and Regions within the U.S. Casualty Lines of Business (Liability, Motor and Workers Compensation). The role focuses on the technical underwriting improvement and impact to the region by improving decision quality. The role will also work on key projects and portfolio analysis that spread across a wide range of topics and functions that drive outcomes and strategies. These include areas such as allocation methodologies, OUE design and credit risk taking impact of the portfolio for growth and retention. The Portfolio Manager will deliver portfolio analysis and actionable underwriting strategies across the regions and LOB's and steer the portfolio to targeted returns. The analysis, training and involvement with the regions that occurs is significant.
This position can be located in one our Zurich offices.

High Level Influencer Focus - The job’s core deliverables rely on influencing, steering, and negotiating outcomes with key underwriting personnel on large transactions and with senior management on strategic matters that influence and drive the portfolio. Relationship development, deep technical expertise and persuasion are critical.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Developing and implementing business and underwriting strategies to meet segment objectives.
  • Drive segment strategies through field office network.
  • Provide a consistent and clear communication on business strategies, profitability objectives, priorities and accountabilities.
  • Evaluate and communicate key underwriting/marketplace issues to peer and senior management staff.
  • Conduct segment analysis to ensure profitability and growth of business.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Risk Management or Underwriting or Broker or Carrier or Market Facing area within the Commercial Insurance industry 
  • Knowledge of Casualty product lines and insurance industry
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage complex portfolios
  • Technical knowledge of insurance operations and functions
  • Casualty lines experience; CPCU
  • Strong strategic experience assessing/anticipating market environment
  • Knowledge of loss trends, triangles, and ratemaking
  • Ability to quantify risk and experience with forecasting methods
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Coaching and mentoring experience
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Ability to interact with the C-Suite
  • Knowledge in risk selection, program design & assessment
