    Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Director

    The Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at Maine Medical Center is seeking an experienced Clinician Educator to serve as Fellowship Program Director.

    Maine Medical Center (MMC) has 637 licensed beds and is the state’s leading tertiary hospital and a Level 1 Trauma Center, with a full complement of residencies and fellowships and an integral part of the Tufts University MedicalSchool. Maine Medical Center supports over 250 Residents and Fellows in 14 residency programs and 9 fellowship programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

    Maine Medical Center’s Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program provides Hospice and Palliative Medicine training opportunities in acute hospital care, inpatient consultation service, and co-located as well as embedded ambulatory clinics.The Fellowship Program at MMC includes a block with Home Hospice Care organizations, and an elective block to allow Fellows more focused time to study in an area of professional interest or medical research.

    Maine Medical Center partners with the The Department of Veterans Affairs for a portion of their program, enabling Fellows to work in a multi-level facility. The Togas VA Medical Center, located five miles east of Augusta, is a 67-operating bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as a 100-bed Nursing Home consisting of 50 Skilled and Longer Stay beds, and a 50-bed Dementia Unit. Fellows spend time in a dedicated Palliative Care Unit, a Long Term Care unit, and ambulatory continuity clinic.

    Candidates must have demonstrated ability as a clinician, medical educator, and administrator, and have practice experience in and a commitment to the provision of palliative medicine, both in the hospital and in community-based settings. The Program Director will ensure that fellows are properly supervised in carrying out their patient care responsibilities and develop and maintain an effective curriculum that complies with all elements of theNext Accreditation System including ACGME core competencies, milestones and Clinical Learning Environment Reviews.

    The Director will guide strategic planning for the ongoing growth and development of the Fellowship program, in cooperation with the Departments of Medicine and Medical Education, and act as a liaison between thefellowship program, the community-based teaching sites, Home Hospice Care organizations, and the Togus VA Medical Center in Chelsea, Maine. The Fellowship Director is a vital link to our clinical practice and is therefore expectedto spend up to 75% of their time in the provision of palliative care services.

    The Fellowship Program Director will be the faculty member responsible for the operation of the Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program with assistance from the Chief of Medicine, the Internal Medicine residency ProgramDirector, and the Fellowship Program Coordinator. Candidates must be Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
