Job Description:

I. PURPOSE OF JOB:

To perform, under the responsibility and supervision of the cardiologist/surgeon, diagnostic and therapeutic tasks to allow the physician to extend his services through the more effective use of his knowledge in the sphere of decision-making required to establish diagnosis and to plan therapy. He/she may assist in gathering the data necessary in implementing the therapeutic plan of the surgeon. A major role will be as a patient's advocate in the medical care system serving as confidant, advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists the surgeon in the preoperative care and work-up of patients.
2. Assists the surgeon with surgical procedures when indicated.
3. Participates in postoperative care of patients, being especially knowledgeable in the recognition of postoperative complications.
4. Performs therapeutic procedures and assignments as directed by the physician and as indicated by his/her training and experience.
5. Assists the cardiologist and vascular surgeon with the management of their patients when indicated.

Job Qualifications:

1. Education:

1. Bachelor of Science degree in a physical science from an accredited institution required

2. Current Physician Assistant licensure in Pennsylvania

3. NCCPA certified

4. Prescriptive authority determined by supervising physician

5. CPR & ACLS

1. Experience: Two years recent experience in related field preferred. Recent Board eligible graduate acceptable.
2. Other Skills:

• Knowledge of pre-existing conditions that may affect procedure.
• Working knowledge of cardiac cath lab procedures and anatomy.
• Basic understanding of major catheterization complications and their treatment.
• Knowledge of cardiac patient post-procedure management.
