JOB SUMMARY
The Pharmacy Manager reports to the Store Owner and is responsible for ensuring that the
pharmacy and all pharmacy staff operate under the legal requirements as defined by the provincial
regulatory body with respect to items such as, but not limited to, all pharmacy practice and
operational policies and procedures, training, quality assurance, risk management, and certain
business administration functions.
The Pharmacy Manager is also responsible for ensuring a safe and productive work environment that
delivers appropriate patient care and customer service. It is the Pharmacy Manager's responsibility
to understand, support, and manage the roles of other pharmacy team members.
In addition to dispensing services, the pharmacy may also offer other health care services such as,
but not limited to, administering injections, medication reviews, minor ailment assessments, and
prescription adaptations. The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for leading these services and
working with the Owner(s) and the rest of the pharmacy team to determine which services the
pharmacy will offer, what training is needed, and develop an implementation plan.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The below represents the general details associated with the principal functions of the
position and should not be construed as a detailed job description. The incumbent may be
required to perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Please note that all the duties and responsibilities outlined below must be carried out in
accordance with all pharmacy legislation and with all internal patient care/customer service
policies and procedures.
Pharmaceutical Distribution
• Maintain a safe and productive work environment through compliance with quality control
policies and procedures for patients and staff
• Provide and supervise the provision of excellent professional service to all patients/customers
to support appropriate and safe patient care
• Perform, supervise, and review the creation and maintenance of complete patient profiles
including, but not limited to, medications, medical conditions, medical history, allergies, and
documentation of patient care activities and services
• Perform, supervise, and review drug preparation and distribution activities including
understanding and adhering to the pharmacy's patient record filing and workflow policies and
procedures such as scanning processes, patient counselling areas, designated "in and out"
areas, wait time etc.
• Ensure that issues identified with individual prescriptions, patient care, and any other services
are addressed within appropriate timeframes
• Verify completed prescriptions for accuracy and ensure personally filled prescriptions are
verified by another pharmacy team member whenever possible
• Perform, supervise, and review the accurate adjudication and sale of prescription and other
purchases using the pharmacy software and point of sales (POS) systems
• Ensure all prescriptions have been verified for appropriateness of therapy before being
released to the patient (this includes prescriptions that have been checked for technical
accuracy by a Registered Pharmacy Technician)
• Provide patient counseling on prescription and non-prescription medications in accordance
with the standards of practice and provincial regulatory requirements
• Complete appropriate documentation for all patient care activities including, but not limited to,
prescription processing, patient counselling, and other pharmacy health care services
• Manage situations involving drug diversion or inappropriate use
• Understand and adhere to the quality assurance polices/procedures for job performance
management, medication error risk management, and the handling of narcotic/controlled
substances including, but is not limited to, documenting all medication and patient care
incidents using the appropriate protocols (including "near misses")
• Prescription filling processes: Pharmacy workflow from beginning to end including who does
what and when, scanning procedures, designated "in and out areas", counseling areas,
compliance packaging, etc.
• Medication and patient care incident prevention and management.
• Inventory management including narcotics and controlled drug management and
pharmaceutical disposal
Professional Services
• Provide and supervise the provision of excellent professional service to all patients to support
appropriate and safe patient care
• In partnership with patients and other health care providers, perform pharmacy services to
meet patients' drug-related needs and improve patient outcomes
• Communicate to customers/patients the details of the service such as, but not limited to,
health care benefits to the patients, logistics, and cost
• Pro-actively inform patients/customers of the services/programs offered
• Provide customers with education and drug information to ensure safe and effective care and
to promote health
• Document pharmacy services rendered, course of action, and outcome achieved, as the
direct result of providing professional services
• Act as a Pharmasave ambassador to the community through the provision of programs
including clinics, personal health solutions, and community seminars
• Build professional relationships with patients, customers, other health care providers, and
industry members
Administration and Management
• Responsible for leading and managing the Pharmacy team, which involves recruiting, training,
performance managing, and conflict resolution
• Responsible for ensuring the pharmacy and pharmacy staff abide by standards and
regulations set out by the province and provincial college
• Create and monitor the schedule for dispensary shifts for all pharmacy team members
• Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of patient/customer information
• Maintain sufficient inventory for appropriate patient care and efficient operations
• Monitor and remove expired medications in accordance with provincial legislation
• Conduct inventory spot checks for accuracy and manage out-of-stocks in accordance with
store policies and procedures
• Comply with federal and provincial regulations along with store procedures to maintain the
security of the narcotics, pharmaceuticals, and other store assets
• Assist in ensuring that all patient care areas are clean, tidy, and organized
• Ensure supplies are checked, restocked, and ordered as necessary
• Ensure health information and patient care resources (paper and electronic) are organized,
updated, and reordered as required to help support all patient care activities, services, and
programs
• Actively review all pharmacy communications sent to the pharmacy from the Pharmasave
office, pharmacy associations, regulatory bodies, health, and other industry organizations
JOB REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
Qualifications and Personal Requirements
• Proof of current pharmacist licensure in good standing from the applicable provincial College
• Continued professional competency through ongoing participation in professional
development activities
• Professional attitude and the ability to communicate well with customers, co-workers,
suppliers, and other members of the healthcare community
• Completion of any applicable Pharmacy Manager training as required by the provincial
College
• Ability to meet all eligibility requirements to assume the role of Pharmacy Manager as set out
by the provincial College (experience, hours required to work in the pharmacy, etc.)
• Strong leadership and communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Standing for up to 8 hours a day
• Lifting/moving up to 30 lbs may be required
• Climbing a ladder may be required
