Pharmacy generalists provide care in both a central staffing and a decentralized capacity. In the decentralized role, the generalist is responsible for all pharmacy activities for an area. This may include patient and provider education, medication profile review and optimization, order verification, medical team rounding, support for nursing staff, and medication reconciliation. In addition, generalist are responsible for precepting pharmacy students and residents as well as process improvement and other committees within the department.

Ensures the appropriate selection, dosing, administration, and dispensing of medication orders. Manages the oversight and supervision of activities ofpharmacy technicians.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and assesses medication orders to identify, prevent and resolve potential and actual drug related problems.
  • Recommends formulary alternatives when appropriate.
  • Compounds and dispenses medications for delivery to patient care areas.
  • Provides drug information and education to medical staff.
  • Communicates with physicians and other clinicians as necessary to facilitate care.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • PharmD or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy.

Certifications:

  • Current State licensure as a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) or eligible for reciprocation in current State within 90 days of hire.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Internal candidates: Minimum of six months as a Pharmacist II
  • External candidates: Minimum of two years experience in hospital pharmacy OR have successfully completed a PGY1 Residency.

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform functions of the job while reaching and stretching, and manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer functions of job.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
