The Department of Orthopedics at Denver Health is recruiting for a full-time Orthopedic Sports Surgeon. The Orthopedic physicians at Denver Health specialize in the care of complex elective and trauma work. The successful applicant will be joining a fellowship trained and certified Sports Medicine surgeon in addition to a team of 18 other Orthopedic surgeons/podiatrists/PM&R MDs. The group has 11 outstanding advanced practitioner and institutional support to provide high level sports care to an active Colorado population. Our service is available for emergency orthopedic trauma care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through Denver Health’s Rocky Mountain Regional Level I Trauma Center.

Our Department of Orthopedics at Denver Health Medical Center comprises of 5 fellowship trained orthopedic trauma surgeons, 5 hand and microvascular surgeons, 3 adult reconstruction surgeons, 2 sports Orthopedic surgeons, 3 podiatrists, 4 Physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians and 11 APPs. Denver Health is a level 1 academic hospital that trains medical students, residents, and fellows from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. All Orthopedic surgeons participate in level I trauma call with in house residents. This position is ideally suited for a fellowship sports surgeon wanting to develop a clinical practice in complex sports pathology in an academic teaching environment.

DHHA was recently recognized by the University Hospital Consortium as having one of the lowest observed to expected mortality rates in the country (Ranked #5 out of 121 academic health centers). Our surgical team is nationally renowned for teaching, research and trauma services. DHHA is also an affiliate hospital of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Essential Functions:

  • Analyze patient's medical history, medication allergies, physical condition, and examination results to verify operation's necessity and to determine best procedure. (10%)
  • Conduct research to develop and test surgical techniques that can improve operating procedures and outcomes related to musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. (10%)
  • Diagnose bodily disorders and orthopedic conditions, and provide treatments, such as medicines and surgeries, in clinics, hospital wards, or operating rooms. (10%)
  • Diagnose or treat disorders of the musculoskeletal system. (10%)
  • Direct and coordinate activities of nurses, assistants, specialists, residents, and other medical staff. (10%)
  • Examine instruments, equipment, and operating room to ensure sterility. (5%)
  • Examine patient to obtain information on medical condition and surgical risk. (5%)
  • Follow established surgical techniques during the operation. (5%)
  • Manage surgery services, including planning, scheduling and coordination, determination of procedures, or procurement of supplies and equipment. (5%)
  • Operate on patient's musculoskeletal system to correct deformities, repair injuries, prevent and treat diseases, or improve or restore patient's functions. (5%)
  • Order and interpret the results of laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging procedures. (5%)
  • Prepare case histories. (5%)
  • Prescribe preoperative and postoperative treatments and procedures, such as sedatives, diets, antibiotics, or preparation and treatment of the patient's operative area. (5%)
  • Provide consultation and surgical assistance to other physicians and surgeons. (5%)
  • Refer patient to medical specialist or other practitioners when necessary. (5%)


Education:

  • Doctorate Degree Required


Work Experience:

Licenses:

  • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment.
  • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
