Job Description

Old Dominion Freight Line is recruiting for a Oracle Applications DBA Technical Lead.   Provide technical leadership to fellow Application Database Administrators and create/enforce database standards.  Plan, coordinate, develop, implement and support database solutions, including database definition, structure, replication strategies, documentation, requirements, guidelines and security.  Troubleshoot technical issues related to Oracle database development and provide oversight and guidance to the Oracle Database Administrators.



  • Interface with development teams, Operation DBA’s and DB2 DBA’s to provide technical expertise, impact analysis of database object modifications and to determine appropriate solutions to database challenges
  • Architect, develop, test and implement database development solutions
  • Lead the effort to support the development, testing, and production environments
  • Create, implement and maintain all database objects; tables, indexes, views, sequences
  • Write advanced database packages, procedures, functions and triggers as required
  • Create, implement and maintain both logical and physical database design
  • Perform advanced database tuning and performance monitoring including indexing, reorganizations and partitioning
  • Perform advanced databasetroubleshooting as needed
  • Design, implement and enforce user access security models
  • Creation, enforcement and review of database standards to ensure that all application design and code is produced with proper integrity, security and performance
  • Act as database technical lead, guiding and mentoring less experienced Oracle DBA’s
  • Facilitation of issues with vendors for technical support
  • Rotate weekly on-callresponsibilities


Job Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience


  • 8 years of experience with Oracle databases
  • Advanced understanding of the Oracle database, related utilities and tools
  • Advanced knowledge of physical database design
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle database tuning and performance monitoring
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle security management
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle data integrity
  • Advanced understanding of Oracle RAC and Data Guard
  • Solid experience using SQL, SQL Plus and PL/SQL
  • Good understanding of the Unix operating system
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Problem-solving ability and proven ability to work multiple deadlines
  • Demonstrate creativity and intellectual curiosity around problem resolution and solution definition
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills with managerial, administrative and technical staff to determine information needs, data flows and systems definitions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Possess a sound understanding of the business



  • Proficient with Solaris Operating Systems
  • Experience with Oracle GoldenGate replication
  • Proficient with Oracle Super Clusters
  • Proficient with Oracle Veridata
  • Proficient with ER/Studio
  • Proficient with dB Maestro
  • Experience with Agile Development methodology
  • Exposure to iSeries DB2
