POSITION: Operations System Engineer

This is a new and unique opportunity to be the subject matter expert for BMS and DCIM across a global operations platform for one of the largest full-solution data center and colocation providers in the world!

You will make a strong impact as you drive systems improvement within Global Operations – partnering with IT and other departments – gathering input from Operations leadership and site personnel to frame out solutions and then manage implementation and support.

Your focus will be to work with Operations Management Systems Leadership and IT to lead technology improvements in all areas of data center operations, with specific focus on directing improvements and supporting daily management of our Building Management Systems (BMS), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems, and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS)

The Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or other related field. (Applicable Work Experience Considered)

  • 5+ Years of experience and a track record partnering with multiple organizations & vendors to deliver integrate and manage quality BMS, DCIM, EPMS and other operational systems within a data center or mission critical environment

  • Knowledge of building environmental controls and alarm systems, including familiarity with BMS system from Schneider Electric, Automated Logic, Tridium, Siemens or Honeywell

  • Knowledge of Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems and principles as well as Energy Management systems

  • Familiar with data aggregation and communication protocols such as Modbus, BACnet, SNMP, and Web Services

  • Ability to work as a team member, troubleshooting and routine training & system orientations across all systems supporting daily operations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in design and operation of critical MEP infrastructure, including multiple types of Uninterruptible Power Systems, Emergency Power Systems, water-cooled and air-cooled air conditioning systems, and critical data center electrical and mechanical distribution systems.

  • Demonstrated understanding of various redundancy configurations of critical infrastructure and their associated limitations.

  • Demonstrated experience in the operations, maintenance, engineering, construction, and delivery of mission critical facilities including the commissioning process.

  • Ability to analyze and assess problems affecting critical operation of facilities, and propose solutions, at times with limited information.

  • Ability to analyze cyber security threats and determine their possible impact on the company's installed systems

  • Ability to comprehend, analyze and interpret complex project documents and to manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Strong IT platform and network knowledge with the ability to communicate effectively with IT professionals and system programmers about technical issues to resolve problems and drive improvements

  • Experience managing relationships with service vendors and technical consultants.

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications as well as Project and Visio or similar products.

  • The ability to interpret blueprints and schematics as required

  • Proven experience creating and altering BMS graphics in any of the BMS systems listed above.

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Operations Systems, you will operate within team of System Administrators, consultants and project teams to drive system improvements and manage day to day support. You will support operations teams and partner with IT to drive system improvements and operational efficiencies in operations managements systems, including BMS, DCIM, EPMS, and Energy Management systems.

At a strategic level, you will work with Operations leadership to implement the overall vision and roadmap for operations management systems in coordination with IT leadership, ensuring alignment with the company's technical, operational and security objectives.


Identifying opportunities to improve systems and optimize processes to solve problems.


Representing operations, coordinate with Design and Construction to receive a fully complete and commissioned product.


Managing daily system issues and troubleshooting problems when necessary


Manage the day-to-day operational aspects of the company's BMS, DCIM, and Alarm Monitoring systems – supporting ongoing maintenance, troubleshooting, root cause analysis and post-event customer support


Drive continual improvements in BMS, DCIM, and EPMS system functionality in coordination with IT and Operations leadership. You will likely represent operations as the customer to any BMS vendor and IT Organization


Assist in developing control and alarm system standards throughout the portfolio with a focus on accuracy, comprehensiveness, and continual improvement to ensure 100% uptime.


Plan, schedule, and coordinate all activities related to BMS and alarm system field deployments with Operations, IT and Design & Construction. Prepare interim project completion reports, as required.


Complete site level surveys and reviews of existing BMS infrastructure as it relates to legacy or acquired properties.


Work with IT to manage revisions, code reviews, testing, and other engineering activities.


Identify opportunities to drive efficiency and technological improvements to increase productivity, streamline manual processes, reduce costs and increase our competitive advantage.


Oversee ongoing system administration and maintenance, as necessary, and in coordination with IT.


Be a point of escalation and provide guidance and direction to the site teams during incidents/events affecting site operation and implement new standards to reduce incidents.


Coordinate with other managers in the company to identify trends in equipment failures and/or site operational issues. Coordinate remote and on-site diagnostics and troubleshooting.


Conduct BMS, DCIM and other system training for site operations teams.


Evaluate design standards and determine an operations impact


Review operations to design and construction sign off to advise QC effort to assure the best possible product for operations


Monitor BMS work order queue and advise both internal users and vendors on best practices


Advise each level of DLR when highly technical expertise is required. DEG, IT Integration, ETC


Access building management systems and validate internal BMS concerns and accomplish first level troubleshooting when required


Propose new solution improvements based on the chosen BMS/EPMS software based on best practices and operations user input


Use a drawing platform either Visio or AutoCAD in order to convey design and set standards


Design improvements in either software or hardware to move DLR to a best in class customer and user experience based on best practices and operations input.


Consistently review BMS alarms for trends and enterprise event monitoring.


Maintain responsibility for the BMS user list and lead audits for assigned properties


Review submittals from standard BMS vendors to ensure standards are followed and solution matches operation's needs.


During major events, be available as the BMS subject matter expert either on the phone or locally if required for the duration.
