Purpose of Job
Responsible for daily operations, staff, performance improvement, compliance with accreditation standards, budget and quality outcomes.
Manage and direct the daily operation of assigned areas and staff. Develop, implement, maintain and enforce departmental programs, policies, procedures and protocols. Ensure and maintain required documentation for compliance with safety, environmental and infection control standards and with local, state and federal regulations. Monitor compliance with standards, identify variances or inabilities to meet established targets and implement action to ensure that targets are met.
Bachelor of Sciense (BS) is biological and/or laboratory science field required.
Masters in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or other Healthcare Business or Operations related field preferred.
Additional education in management, leadership, marketing and/or sales preferred.
Current College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspector competency required within 6 months of hire (Gen Lab, and others as applicable to areas of expertise and oversight).
5 to 7 years progressive management and leadership experience working inPathology Laboratory Services or related laboratory environment required.
Board of Registry certification from American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), Nurse Competence in Aging (NCA) or equivalent professional organization required (Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Cytotechnologist (CT), Histology Technologist (HTL), Physician Assistant (PA).
Able to organize and perform multiple tasks, problem-solve and prioritize work assignments.
Advanced interpersonal relationship and customer service skills required to effectively communicate with staff, physicians, administrators, patients, visitors and vendors.
Ability to mentor, supervise, delegate and evaluate.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for positive interaction with staff and customers required.
Ability to effectively communicate with staff, applicants, all levels of hospital/health system/clinic staff and individuals external to the organization.
Knowledge and experience of College of American Pathologists (CAP), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), as well as The Joint Commission accreditation standards required.
Knowledge of Laboratory laws, regulations, guidelines and professional standards required.
Knowledge of Laboratory billing and coding laws and regulations required. Able to effectively contribute to and carry through the development and actualization of laboratory and hospital strategic initiatives.

Oversees various Laboratory Departments and services by managing the daily operations to ensure patients, hospitals, and/or client's needs are met, equipment, testing/supplies and labor is utilized appropriately.
Performs management duties such as hiring, training, coaching, counseling, corrective action, terminations, and evaluations, to ensure competent and engaged staff within the Pathology Center departments.
Leads direct reports by mentoring, coaching, training, supporting, and establishing objectives to promote success, growth, engagement and to contribute to Pathology Center and Methodist Health System strategic goals.
Monitors and reviews employee productivity/performance, engagement, staff development, and program implementation for service excellence, efficiency, effectiveness, work priorities, and compliance within applicable laws, rules, regulations, and standards.
Develops and maintains the departmental operating budget by implementing action plans to control spending and utilization of approved purchasing practices to ensure fiscal viability of the Pathology Center.
Oversees contractual agreements for outreach clients, equipment, reagents, maintenance and services appropriate to assigned areas.
Identifies and monitors area for improvement for quality assurance purposes for testing procedures, business effectiveness and in support of Pathology Center and hospital Quality Management policies and goals.
Conducts and/or coordinates orientation training and in-service training to explain policies, work procedures, and to demonstrate use and maintenance of equipment to ensure compliance with departmental procedures.
Develops and implements Pathology Center departmental policies and procedures as well as laboratory and organizational strategic planning.
Attends internal and external meetings to ensure quality processes, oversight and compliance regarding Pathology Center issues within the Health System.
At the meetings and through various forms of communications, establishes effective working relationships with the Pathology staff, Physicians, Hospital Departments/staff, vendors and outreach clients to ensure success of the Pathology Center and Health System.
Participates in mandatory in-services and/or CE programs as mandated by policies and procedures and/or external agencies and as directed by laboratory and hospital leadership.
