The Operations Manager-Routed Services manages a team of people who are committed to providing quality service to our customers.

The job includes managing our Dispatchers in Central Dispatch and 30 to 40 routed service drivers and their service routes. The daily work environment requires quick responses and adaptability to rapidly changing situations. The Operations Manager must be a strong leader who can handle multiple tasks in a very high-paced and dynamic environment. This position will be crucial in ensuring Don’s Johns remain an industry leader. 

 Responsibilities:

 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each responsibility. Other minor responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Manage day-to-day of Routed Services Operations.
  • Ensure all weekly/monthly service stops are completed on their assigned days.
  • Work with Dispatch Lead to ensure scheduling and routing are done in the best way possible to maximize customer satisfaction, efficiency, and profitability.
  • Manages the end-of-day check-in process, capturing and communicating key service, safety, and equipment issues.
  • Coordinate driver meetings. Work withother departments to determine content…include training and company updates.
  • Ensure new drivers are trained properly, and are performing to DJ standards.  
  • Communicate with Special Event, P&D Manager and Fleet Manager continuously.
  • Reviews weekly demand / volume for routes, determines potential gains from re-routing, and recommends re-routes to the routing specialist.
  • Perform necessary discipline for drivers as needed, including write-ups.
  • Oversee training of Route Supervisors.
  • Assist Route Supervisors in managing workloads.
  • Drive initiatives in continuous improvement, training, and efficiency.
  • With help from Accounting, maintain all permits and dumping privileges necessary to conduct business in service areas.
  • Assist COO in developing and managing Operational Budget and forecasts.
  • Develop reports and analyses for operational performance and efficiency.
  • Assist COO in special projects and initiatives.
  • Work with team of peers in software and technology projects.
  • Assists with personnel needs of the department including selecting, coaching, disciplining, and training employees and evaluating employee performance. Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.
  • Participates in regular P&L reviews to ensure that budgets are met; develops and implements programs for optimal equipment utilization, equipment maintenance, and labor and material costs.
  • Reviews weekly demand / volume for routes, determines potential gains from re-routing, and recommends re-routes to the routing specialist.
  • Sets and monitors productivity, service, and safety targets for each route and driver by collecting accurate data and reporting for various incentive pay programs.
  • Ensures that drivers comply with physicals, drug or alcohol tests, and training required by regulatory agencies. Documents and maintains records required by regulatory agencies such as the Department ofTransportation and OSHA.
  • Conducts Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents, ensuring consistent discipline and retraining.
  • Visits customers and customer sites to evaluate and resolve safety issues, seeking service alternatives where appropriate. Ensures set-up errors and missed pickups are reported and resolved.
  • Assists with personnel needs of the department including selecting, coaching, disciplining, and training employees and evaluating employee performance. Provides input into termination, compensation, and promotion decisions.

Requirements

 

Knowledge of routing, mapping and the different territories in the Washington DC Metropolitan area including; Northern Virginia, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Fauquier, Fredericksburg, Prince William, and MD. The Director of Opera must be assertive, resourceful, composed, and conduct themselves in a professional manner. 

 

  • Four-year college degree in business and/or logistics preferred.
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience, with emphasis on Operations Management and Logistics.
  • Well versed in routing efficiency. 
  • Strong computer proficiency including the Internet.
  • Superior Communication Skills: verbal and written.
  • Able to embrace change and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Self-starter with an ability to work in a team environment.
  • Eager to learn new skills and adapt well to change.
  • Prompt and dependable work habits with a positive attitude.

  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work weekends when necessary.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish a big plus.
