The Air Force Research Laboratory's Atomic Long-range Systems Branch (AFRL/RVBN) seeks a highly motivated and experienced career professional to support nuclear environments research efforts, with an emphasis in computational modeling, to support enduring nuclear deterrence capabilities.

Position duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop research areas and execute research efforts looking at nuclear weapon effects on satellites, weapons systems, flight components, etc.
  • Conduct comprehensive analyses and trade studies to assess system performance, identify vulnerabilities, and quantify system effectiveness in normal and abnormal environments.
  • Advise system designers on nuclear environments and radiation hardness requirements.
  • Develop and/or reconstitute modeling capabilities of prompt and delayed nuclear environments and effects [e.g. electromagnetic pulse (EMP), electromagnetic interference (EMI), X-Ray, gamma, neutron, thermal radiation, blast, gust, ground shock, ejecta] on mission-critical components, sub-systems, and systems.
  • Collaborate with warfighters and stakeholders to identify and characterize future nuclear threats and threat scenarios.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and specifications for nuclear systems.
  • Perform gap/opportunity identification and analysis on national infrastructure, advise on nuclear effects testing gaps and strategies to reconstitute testing capabilities for M&S validation and verification.

Required Qualifications

  • US Citizenship
  • Must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain, a DOD TS/SCI clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in physics, nuclear engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in at least one of the following settings (can include graduate school):
    - Radiation effects lab
    - Engineering-level code development
    - Space environment research to include material aging effects

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD degree in physics, nuclear engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Command, Control and Communications, (NC3) systems architecture.
  • Knowledge of US Nuclear Deterrent structure and USSTRATCOM mission.
  • Understanding foreign nuclear and conventional threats.
  • 4+ years of relevant experience in nuclear environments and effects modeling, simulation, and assessment.
  • Strong background in understanding of nuclear weapons design, outputs, as well as nuclear weapons effects phenomena.
  • Proficiency in simulation software and tools, e.g. Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport (MCNP), Rad CTH.
  • Strong background in radiation effects on electronics.
